′′ Few people know that Popeye's character (Arm wrestle) really existed. His real name was Frank ′′ Rocky ′′ Fiegel, born in Poland in 1868. he emigrated with his family to America where in 1887 he joined the Navy.
When he was with children he held the pipe with the corner of his mouth and told them the antics of his youth, often boasting of his physical strength and loudly claiming that spinach is the food that makes him invincible.
Popeye's character creator Elzie Crisler Segar was born in Chester and was one of the children who had the privilege of hearing ′′ live ′′ the stories of the former sailor."😇

Commissioners voted to open Escambia County beaches on May 1 every day from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Pavilions and restroom facilities will remain closed. The County will provide port-o-lets and handwashing stations. All activities are allowed except loitering underneath the Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier. Groups must be fewer than 10 people and groups must remain 6 feet apart from other groups.
A letter will be sent to the State and Federal officials requesting the state parks and national seashore be opened, as well.
NOTE: The restaurants currently are take out only and bars are closed. Those re-openings are determined by the State of Florida (not Escambia County Commissioners.)
