The capital also boasts cycling, hiking, ice-skating, kayaking, sailing and skiing, all within its city limits and just a short train ride away. Next, take a scenic train ride to Bergen, gateway to the beautiful fjords. On this train route, arguably the world's most beautiful and exciting, experience some of the most dramatic and magnificent Norwegian nature. You will see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls that plunge from the steep cliffs of the snow-capped mountain slopes, as well as mountain farms clinging on to steep slopes. Stay overnight in the picturesque village of Flam, before continuing on to Bergen. To get there, take an express boat all the way, (5 hours) and soak up some more scenery along the stunningly beautiful Sognefjord. The city of Bergen is renowned for its beautiful nature and offers excellent hiking opportunities in its immediate surroundings, and is also famous for its cute cobbled streets in the charming historic center and its cultural scene and nightlife. Your journey continues with a shrt flight to Alesund, a unique city which has been re-built in the attractive art nouveau style and is situated on a chain of islands. From here, take a full day tour to the world famous Geirangerfjord. Impressively boasting the #1 position in the list of UNESCO world heritage sights, the breathtakingly beautiful Geirangerfjord is not to be missed. Take time to experience this natural wonder on a full day sightseeing cruise from Alesund. A comfortable coach will take you to Hellesylt, from where you will cruise along the Geirangerfjord to Geiranger, past the dramatic scenery of steep mountains, sleepy farm houses and mesmerizing waterfalls. In Geiranger you will have time to explore and then a bus will take you up Eagle Road to see incredible views of the Geirangerfjord. The next day, board the Hurtegruten cruiseship going north, beginning your 2 day coastal cruise from Alesund to Svolvaer, in the Lofoten islands. Get settled in your private cabin and enjoy the views of the coastal villages and islands as you relax and cruise north for 2 days, all the way to Svolvaer, in the lovely Lofoten islands. Neither written descriptions nor photographs can prepare one for Italy's capital, the Eternal City, Rome. In Rome one is continually aware of how eternal this place really is, with nearly 3,000 years of history reflected in beautiful ruins all throughout the city. Gazing at Ancient Rome's once-opulent residences and public buildings, now lying in ruins, it is incredible to consider that this was once the center of a vast and powerful empire which set the foundations for the Western world as we know it. Today, the contrast of ancient and modern is constant; it is perhaps the only city in the world where the chaos of daily life is played out on such a dramatic historical stage. Rome is full of surprises. An unexpected glimpse of the Colosseum at the end of a narrow backstreet is breath-taking. The sudden appearance of a romantic landmark while strolling the quiet streets takes one continually by surprise. Beyond the ancient wonders, small churches and museums can be found on every corner in the city's center, hiding unexpected riches; beautiful fountains and colorful markets decorate the piazzas and wonderful parks, gardens, and charming neighborhoods provide peaceful escapes from the intensity and noise of the city.
