Wind your way around the book nooks & shelves going every which way, up the narrow stairs to the 2nd floor where musicians perform, get a feel for the era when books were king & Shakespeare & Co was a haven for up & coming Writers!
No pictures allowed inside, so you will need to go there & discover it for yourself~ stop in the cafe on the way out, or go around the corner to Odette if you prefer.

Shakespeare and Company in Paris is more than just a bookstore; it's a legendary landmark steeped in literary history. The original shop was opened in 1919 by Sylvia Beach, an American expatriate, and quickly became a haven for the "Lost Generation" of writers, including Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein.
Beach's Shakespeare and Company wasn't just a place to buy books; it was a lending library, a meeting place, and often a source of support for struggling writers. Most famously, Sylvia Beach bravely published James Joyce's Ulysses in 1922 when no one else dared.
Though the original store closed during the German occupation of Paris in WWII, its spirit was revived in 1951 by another American, George Whitman, who named his own Left Bank bookstore in homage to Beach's iconic establishment. This second iteration, still operating today under the management of Whitman's daughter Sylvia (named after the original founder), continues the tradition of welcoming writers and book lovers from around the world, offering a unique blend of literary history and contemporary charm.
