On one of my first trips in the Everglades, I was guiding a 16-year-old from the UK who’d just completed a wilderness therapy program in Hawaii. She needed a place to land—literally and emotionally—before her next chapter at school.
So, we paddled from Everglades City to Flamingo. Just her and two guides, 10 days. Some days were full of energy. Others? We had time to kill and nothing but sea and sky.
That’s when we got into shell spotting. We had a guidebook and a bandana, and decided to turn shell identification into a game: who could match the most names to what we found?
There are so many kinds—coquinas, tulip shells, lightning whelks. We didn’t collect, just studied. And suddenly, the quiet coast became this tiny, colorful universe of its own.
On Tuesday May 13, 14 graduating eighth graders from the Sandpoint Waldorf School will trade their mountain views for ocean breezes as they embark on an unforgettable trip to the East Coast — marking the culmination and celebration of their Waldorf education.

Costa Rica has a different feel. It’s vibrant, accessible, and full of iconic spots that deserve the hype. On this trip with a group of young adults, we headed to the famous Rio Celeste waterfall—a must-see, yes, but not exactly off the grid.
Still, nature had her own plans.
As we walked the busy trail, loud with laughter and muddy boots, everything stopped. A tapir—huge, quiet, elusive—stepped across the trail ahead of us. And without anyone saying a word, the group fell completely silent.
There’s something about a wild animal that does that. You forget where you are, who you are, and just watch.
Crowds or not, Costa Rica always delivers moments of real wonder.

I’ll never forget one of my first guiding experiences in Alaska. We paddled into a quiet, glassy bay—no wind, no people, just us and the wild. It felt like a scene out of National Geographic.
Two sea lions caught our attention. At first, we thought they were playing. Then we realized: they were feasting. Salmon flying, shredded in mid-air, flung back and forth like a wild oceanic game of catch.
Yes, it startled us at first. But that’s Alaska—it’s raw, alive, and so beautifully untamed. We kept a respectful distance, stayed calm, and watched in awe.
This place isn’t about chasing danger—it’s about witnessing the wild with humility, intention, and good guides by your side.

In 2011, after years of working together for premier outdoor adventure and wilderness therapy programs, John Winton, Todd McKibben, and Lars Hall came together to create Breakwater Expeditions. Amongst the three of them, they had over 5,000 days of guiding, developing and executing programming, and teaching in the outdoors. They recognized the depth of their experience and expertise and wanted to help more groups and individuals find their way to the great outdoors.
Breakwater provides intentional programming to any group with a common thread, families, and individuals. Trips are fully customizable.
