Have you ever seen a Giant Desert Centipede in Sedona? Probably not, because they’re nocturnal and do their best to leave us alone and stay away from humans. However, these carnivorous hunters eat insects, arachnids, lizards, toads, and even mice. Yeah, you read that right, they can eat a freaking mouse…

Instead of teeth, they use their front legs, which are modified into “venom claws” (or forcipules) to inject venom into their prey. Interestingly, massive reductions and extirpations of centipedes in urban areas and gardens across the World have been linked to the over abundance of cockroaches, mice, and spiders in our dwellings. While they may look scary, they play a vital role in balancing out our ecosystem in Sedona and keeping the more dangerous creepy crawlies out of our sheets and shoes.

The “Arizona Desert Anemone” is better known as Anemone Tuberosa, and most commonly referred to as Desert Windflower in Sedona. This perennial wildflower will typically grow on streambanks, cliff edges, mesas, and rocky slopes from 2,500 - 5,000 feet above sea-level. It usually blooms from February - May and is found throughout the southwest in AZ, CA, NM, NV, TX and UT. In Arizona, it’s observed most commonly in the northwest, central, and southeast part of the state.

Have you ever spotted a Cecrops Eyed Silkmoth Caterpillar in Sedona?

Their spectacular array of spines and vibrant color are candy on the eyes. They exist throughout mountain ranges from central Arizona to southwestern New Mexico, and even south into Mexico. They’re typically found in oak woodlands, shrublands, and thorn scrub. In our region, you can find them feeding on ceanothus, catclaw, mountain mahogany, and a variety of oaks.

While they’re a dream specimen for any nature photographer, their spines are known to cause severe rashes — which can last for days and produce a burning sensation that resembles multiple bee stings. For others with severe insect allergies, they can even trigger an allergic reaction that could be considered life-threatening without proper treatment.

This one was seen near Oak Creek on the historic Allen’s Bend Trail.
