In the heart of Chicago’s Old Town, towering over cobblestone streets and historic rowhouses, stands St. Michael’s Church—a beautiful, Gothic landmark with a haunted past.

Built in 1852, St. Michael’s was one of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Legend has it, the church’s bells rang on their own as the fire swept through the city… even though the ropes had burned away. Some say the spirits of parishioners lost in the fire still linger, mourning their city—and their lives.

But the most famous ghost? A faceless monk, often seen drifting near the altar or standing silently in the aisles. Witnesses describe cold chills, whispers in empty pews, and a heavy, uneasy feeling that lingers long after leaving.

Is it the monk? Or something older?
