This home's location in the Pacific Northwest presented the owners with a welcome dilemma: What could they build to make the most of being surrounded on three sides by a thriving, verdant landscape and on the fourth side by fresh water and open skies?
The answer was to create a multilevel home with modernist lines that combines concrete, wood, and glass in a way that integrates organically with the surroundings. Functional divisions across the living space are delineated gently within an open flow, leveraging thermally broken steel windows and doors in place of opaque walls to paint interiors with geometrically divided light and reveal living tapestries of leafy green and liquid blue just beyond the glass.
In an expansive living area near the water, what appears to be yet another striking wall of windows is actually a fully mobile accordion panel system. It can be folded up with ease to eliminate the boundary between inside and out. When that barrier is removed, the reflective properties of our windows take center stage inside as they mirror the water's gentle motion where it meets the contours of the exterior living space.
