Time to come see the NEW pool!!

Christmas came early for geologists at Yellowstone National Park this April when a regularly scheduled survey resulted in finding a new thermal feature at one of the most famous national parks.

It's difficult to describe if you've never been to Lamar Valley, but you can stand on the north side of the valley and look down across the flat grassy meadows that spread out to the river, and then turn your gaze east and west and as far as you can see there are bison covering the entire valley for miles. The bison bulls have already begun the rut, grunting and growling and in some cases engaging in fatal battles. The cows grazing all day long seem to be everywhere. And by their side, the adorable orange calves follow their mothers wherever they go, stopping to nurse at every chance they get. Truly an iconic American animal and such a joy to observe.

Wolves are naturally strong swimmers, and Yellowstone's wolves are no exception.

They utilize water for hunting, sometimes using it to their advantage when pursuing prey.

Wolves frequently swim across the Yellowstone River and other waterways in the park, sometimes traveling a mile or more in the water.

Wolves might swim to reach a carcass or to approach prey from a different angle.

They may also swim to reunite with their Pack on the other side of a river or lake, and on a hot day cool down.

One of the coolest (actually hottest!) things in Yellowstone is Grand Prismatic Spring. I took this from the overlook yesterday.

Grand Prismatic Spring's name originates from its vibrant, rainbow-like colors, reminiscent of the spectrum produced when white light is passed through a prism. These colors are caused by different types of thermophilic bacteria living in the spring at varying temperatures. The center of the spring is a deep blue due to its high temperature (as high as 200°F), while the surrounding colors (yellow, orange, red, and green) appear as the water cools and supports different microbial life.

Awesome history!!

The rumble of the passenger train reverberates through the mountains as dawn breaks above the lodgepole pines on a crisp morning in 1925. Early risers, bright-eyed in sharp suits and long dresses, pace the train’s observation car in anticipation. In the sleeping cars, groggy faces peer out the win...

The struggle for allowing wolves to thrive in the wild continues. After thirty years you would think the wolf haters would have realized how valuable these iconic creatures are to the balance of nature. For decades the states near Yellowstone have done their best to kill as many wolves as they can without letting the population go low enough to force them to cede the management of wolves back to the federal government. Now I hear that in Colorado, where a reintroduction has recently occurred, there are special interests pushing to kill an entire pack, including puppies. After so many years of dedicated scientific work to bring back the Mexican wolves to the American southwest, there are other special interests pushing to remove their ESA protections and open hunting.
There are effective programs to protect livestock that will help ranchers and compensation available when necessary. Both domestic dogs and poisonous plants kill many times the numbers of livestock that wolves kill. It's time for us to put behind our medieval superstitions and stop acting like Little Red Riding Hood.
