Not normally my kind of place, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Morning tea service at in Belgravia. Most people go for the IG-worthy setting, but Inreally enjoyed the food! The top tier holds a butter croissant and a yoghurt parfait with poached berries and almond granola; the middle tier holds a mini buttermilk pancake and a mini brioche French toast served with berry sauce, maple syrup and vanilla & lemon mascarpone; the bottom tier holds your choice of savouries, and I chose the perfectly cooked eggs Florentine, the smoked salmon, egg and avocado brioche and my favorite, the “Fancy Forager’s toast” which consists of creamy mushrooms, truffle, soft-boiled egg with bacon. It includes your choice of their artisan teas or coffees, and came in at £40. Considering the quality of the food, this was not too bad. Make sure to reserve in advance as they will up quickly, and the Belgravia location is the only one that offers this breakfast offering. #

When in London, gotta stop into a chippy for fish & chips. One of the better ones I’ve tried is Poppie’s in SoHo. I had the haddock which was a generous portion, battered and perfectly cooked. The fish was flaky and moist, and the batter was not greasy at all and perfectly crispy. Comes with their homemade tartar sauce, but I opted for just salt & vinegar with a side of curry sauce for the chips. Not a bad value at £18.95 for a sit-down meal and a busy but cosy location situated in the madness of SoHo. Oh, and the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream is perfect after the fish! Highly recommended!

A little posh afternoon tea at the Peninsula Hotel in Belgravia. Started with an Amuse Bouche of Bali salmon with Granny Smith, Finger lime, Creme fraiche and caviar, sandwiches were (in order of deliciousness) Honey roast ham with English mustard & spicy apple chutney on caraway bread,; St. Ewe’s egg & truffle, Isle of Mull cheese and chives on white bread; Maldon cured smoked salmon dill, sour cream, confit Buddha lemon on white bread; baby cucumber, apple, mint & cream cheese on Granary bread; Norfolk Bronze turkey, apricot & cranberry relish and stuffing on cranberry bread. There were plain and raisin scones with clotted cream and a Mandarin curd and strawberry jam, and the sweets were Dulce de leche Gingerman, a Mintblac, and spiced coffee Christmas bauble and a Black Forest cake. At £95 pp, it was pleasant but didn’t crack my top 5 for afternoon teas in London. Bonus points for their luxurious bathrooms with heated Toto toilets with all the features (!).

Great dinner at New Dishoom Covent Garden; started with the Dishoom House Chaat (fried sweet potatoes topped with yogurt, pomegranate, beetroot, radish, carrot, tamarind drizzle and greet chutney); Chilli chicken ( a spicy Indo-Chinese mashup); Dishoom Chiken Tikka Masala, Tandoori lamb chops, chilli butter-bhutta (like an Indian elote); garlic naan; Coconutty fruit crumble(pineapple, apple & raspberry topped with a toasted coconut crumble and served with coconut ice cream); a Malai kulfi to end the meal.
Not only was the food great, service was even better. We didn’t have reservations so waited about 10 minutes in the walk-in queue, and while we were waiting, the staff handed out Dishoom umbrellas to use while waiting and brought around trays of their delicious house chai onward up while waiting. The food came out very quickly, but the service was comfortably non-rushed. Oftentimes restaurants that are over-hyped don’t live up to their reputation, but that wasn’t the case here!

Stopped my favorite barbecue spot in the Bay Area in Redwood City for a family pack of moist brisket (not the sliced) and ribs. I was fortunate enough to run into and Castro who stopped what they were doing to chat. Been enjoying Capelo’s from their food truck only days before the beautiful BBQ & Beer Garden spot was opened and I haven’t found a better brisket since. If you go, ask for the brisket moist, and if you are really lucky and they have their seasonal corn salad, don’t miss it! My favorite barbecue since the late Flint’s in West Oakland RIP.

Had a great birthday gift private tour this past weekend with .afzall and the birthday girl in the Tenderloin. The TL gets a deservedly bad rap, but if you know where to look, there are some great eats. Some of the highlights included the banh xeo and goi bit (duck salad) at Tuyet Mai, the Egyptian koshary at an otherwise non-Egyptian Mojo cafe , and some surprise eats at Shalimar. These adventurous eaters enjoyed the lamb brains masala, Shalimar chawal and of course the tandoori lamb chops. We made a few other stops including a very memorable dessert treat, but to find out where and what we had, you’ll have to call and book a tour!

Must try here. It did not disappoint!
Charlie had the enchiladas ( pork with red sauce and chicken with green sauce) and we split a beef Milanesa torta just because. Will definitely be back for the pozole, menudo and a delicious sopa de res which the little old lady at the next table was enjoying!

If you find yourself cruising the Windward side of Oahu, keep an eye out for the Waiahole Poi Factory right on the Kam Highway. Even if you just ate like we did, do yourself a favor and stop by for a quick sweet snack. You cannot go wrong with the Sweet Lady of Waiahole; warm kulolo topped with Haupia ice cream. This time I got the lesser known Tahitian Sweet Lady, which is warm po’e topped with a scoop of Haupia ice cream. Po’e is a Polynesian dessert made with bananas, tapioca starch and coconut milk. Delicious!

Breakfast this morning in Kailua at . Hawaiian smoked sausage with over easy eggs and rice and a short stack of banana pancakes with Mac nut sauce, and homemade corned beef hash and eggs. The “newer” location is bigger and the wait is shorter , but I’m partial to the old location across from the bowling alley. Doesn’t matter cuz I’ll go anywhere for that Mac nut sauce!

Dinner tonight at the Kaka’ako location of@Highway Inn. Got the pork lau lau plate with lomi salmon, ‘uala, haupia with a side of chicken long rice and potato-mac salad. The kid got the Plantation Mixed plate with Pulehu Ribs, pulehu ribs, fresh grilled marlin with furikake rice and potato Mac salad. Delicious and a lot of food for the money. Really friendly service and laid back atmosphere. Get there early cuz it gets crowded at dinner! #’uala

Was in Waipahu this evening so we hit up Elena’s for a great Filipino dinner. All the auntie’s were super nice and recommended the June Special, which was a plate with pork adobo, pancit , fried rice omelet and their lectin special. We also got the Triple D Special with the pork adobo fried rice and the lectin special. Everything was good , but the lechon special was GREAT! Crispy,
Crunchy but still moist chunks of lechon topped with chopped onion, chopped tomato and green onions. Hit it with a splash of vinegar and it is perfection. I could eat this every day! Had to get the lumpia and some Turon as well, but I’m still thinking about the lechon special the next day!

I think I have tried everything on offer at over the years, but this may be the best thing I have ever had here. Melts cheese (Gruyère?), yellow squash, courgette, and red pepper on their impossibly flaky pastry crust. This was as delicate as their signature butter croissant, but still savory and satisfying.
While lacking the charm of the original the Civic Center location was non-stop busy and perfect for a pre-theater snack.

One of favorite “hidden gems” in the Bay is El Chaparro in Richmond., CA. They are known for their barbacoa borrego estilo Hidalgo. The lamb is tender and succulent with a mildly gamey lamb flavor without too much funk. I got the barbacoa plate which comes with rice, beans, a little salad and homemade tortillas (5 pieces). The portion was more than generous and comes with all the fixings; chopped onions & cilantro, limon and green and roasted salsas. Because it was cold out, I got a small consome for sipping too. Great flavor and not too salty or oily like some. Check them out!

Great anniversary dinner last night at Chez Panisse Cafe. Zucchini, squash blossom and gremolata pizza, tomato soup with Indian spices, grilled quail with red polenta & figs, halibut with Provençal tomato, pork loin with tapenade, coconut ice cream with a ridiculous bittersweet chocolate sauce & candied coconut, Dapple a dandy & Emerald Beaut pluot galette and vanilla Kirsch cream puff with strawberries l great food and even better service! A fantastic experience!
