Everyone knows the Black Hills for Mount Rushmore, Deadwood, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally — but the Hills don’t stop at the state line. In Wyoming’s Weston County, you get the same rugged beauty, minus the crowds. More room to hike, more room to bike, more room to just breathe. This is the quiet edge of the Black Hills, and it’s Wide Open.

A glimpse into Weston County’s past — a woman and a young buck sharing a quiet moment somewhere in the Black Hills. We don’t know her name, we don’t know the year, and we definitely don’t know how she made friends with a deer that fast. But one thing’s for sure: the Wide Open has always had a little magic to it.

“Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground.” Teddy Roosevelt said that, and it rings true in Weston County every fall. Life gets busy, but out here in the quiet of the Black Hills, it would be a shame not to look up. So on these clear, cool nights, don’t forget what Teddy said — we could all use a little starlight.

Fall in Weston County is already settled into the streets of Newcastle and Upton — gold cottonwoods along the courthouse lawn, amber light on the Anna Miller Museum grounds, and Old Town looking right at home surrounded by color. It's a season for slowing down: cooler mornings, softer light, and no rush to be anywhere else. Just wander, and see how much of the season is already right here. This fall, take a walk around town and discover how much of the Wide Open is waiting for you. 🍂 🌻

The Weston County region has a rich history linked to coal. One of the area's earliest settlements, Cambria, was established as a mining town, while the nearby Newcastle developed as railroad lines extended westward. The vision was to establish a city where a railroad spur diverged from the main Burlington line to travel north past Cambria. The city's name was inspired by J.H. Hemingway, the Superintendent of the Cambria Coal Company, who wanted to pay homage to his coal-shipping hometown, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in England. As the railroad network expanded, so did Newcastle, which still houses the headquarters of the historic Burlington Railroad, now known as BNSF. 🚂⚒️
