Oklahoma Ozarks Tourism Association

Oklahoma Ozarks Tourism Association We are a Multi County Tourism Organization, instrumental in marketing the beautiful foothills of the Ozarks! Welcome to Oklahoma's clear water paradise!

Whether this is your first adventure or a return visit, we know that you will find what your heart desires with our vast array of activities. Scuba diving, camping, hiking, fishing, golfing, water sports, scenic nature, fishing, and hunting are all surrounded with beautiful rock bluffs and days that end with spectacular sunsets. Almost 13,000 acres of water and over 130 miles of shoreline of Lake

Tenkiller and scenic Illinois River's 70 miles of floating and 8 miles of trout fishing provide the ideal setting to forget about Monday. Tenkiller is nestled in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, surrounded with dogwood forests, hilly terrain, and beautiful foliage from spring until fall, when the changing autumn leaves draw many travelers around the lake and up scenic highway 10. It also serves as one of the flyways of migratory animals, such as Canada geese, ducks, monarch butterflies, warblers, bald eagles, and many others. The State of Oklahoma and the U.S. Corps of Engineeers manage ten marinas and fourteen parks with many different facilities around the lake. There are twenty-four boat launching ramps around the lake, three floating restaurants, and many islands to explore, the most famous being “Goat Island”, which is actually inhabited with goats that can sometimes be spotted grazing at the shoreline. Enjoy your trip and soak in as much of the relaxation and fun that you have time for, while remembering what else there is to offer that can be experienced in your next trip to Oklahoma's gem in the woodlands.

There’s just something about a day spent floating the Illinois River that feels like the perfect Oklahoma Ozarks getaway...

Start the morning with the anticipation of getting on the water. Grab your canoe, kayak or tube, gather your friends and family, and get ready for a day of sunshine, cool water and plenty of laughs.

Then, let the river set the pace.

Float through the beautiful Ozark landscape, drift beneath towering trees, stop along the way for a swim or a picnic, and find those quiet stretches where the only sounds are the water flowing and nature all around you.

There will probably be a little paddling, a lot of floating, maybe a splash or two - and plenty of memories made along the way.

By the time you reach the end of your float, you’ll understand why the Illinois River is one of the places that makes the Oklahoma Ozarks such a special destination.

Clear water. Beautiful scenery. Outdoor adventure. Small-town charm. And a whole lot of fun.

That’s a pretty typical day in the Oklahoma Ozarks. :)

Sometimes, the best stories are hiding in plain sight - along the highway.

Take this historical marker along U.S. Highway 64 between Sallisaw and Vian telling the story of Dwight Mission, just one of the many fascinating chapters in the history of the Oklahoma Ozarks.

The mission was first established in 1821 among the Western Cherokees in Pope County, Arkansas Territory, by Rev. Cephas Washburn. In 1829, it moved west with the Cherokee people to their new homeland in what would become Oklahoma.

And there's even more to the story. The marker notes that the nearby post office was named for Gen. John Nicks, whose wife, Sarah Perkins Nicks, became the first woman appointed to a U.S. government position in Oklahoma in 1832.

Pretty amazing history to discover along a road trip, isn't it?

Historical markers like this offer just a glimpse into the incredible stories, people and heritage that shaped the Oklahoma Ozarks. So the next time you're traveling through our region, slow down, look around and experience a little of our history!
