🍂 Take the Scenic Route Through the Oklahoma Ozarks!

When autumn arrives in the Oklahoma Ozarks, one of the best ways to experience the season is simply to hit the road and enjoy the scenery. The scenic drive from Tahlequah to Sallisaw is one of Oklahoma’s designated fall foliage routes — and October is the perfect time to explore it.

The route winds through the beautiful Cookson Hills, where tree-lined roads, rolling hills, and hardwood forests come alive with brilliant shades of red, orange, gold, and yellow. Peak fall color typically arrives from late October through the first week of November, making this a great time to slow down, roll down the windows, and enjoy an unforgettable autumn drive through the Oklahoma Ozarks.

Make a day of it by adding a stop at Sequoyah’s Cabin and Museum, located just outside Sallisaw. The historic site offers a fascinating glimpse into Cherokee history and culture, surrounded by the beauty of the changing season.

And don't be afraid to explore beyond the designated route. Highway 59 south from Sallisaw offers another beautiful drive through the timber-covered hills and winding roads of eastern Oklahoma — perfect for those who enjoy taking the long way around.

Our tip: Don't rush it! Pack a picnic, bring your camera, fill up the gas tank, and leave yourself plenty of time to pull over and enjoy the views. In the Oklahoma Ozarks, sometimes the best destination is the road itself.

So much history & heritage here in the Oklahoma Ozarks!

The Foreman Cabin at Sequoyah’s Cabin Museum in Sallisaw is one of the oldest structures in Oklahoma. It was built by Cherokee Nation citizen Alexander Foreman, who came to the area in 1834 from Tennessee. Settling in present-day western Sequoyah County near the confluence of the Illinois and Arkansas rivers, he built three cabins and operated a ferry.

This cabin witnessed the arrival of Cherokee Removal survivors in 1839 and the Civil War. Preserved by Foreman descendants, the cabin (pictured) was relocated about thirty miles east to the historic Sequoyah’s Cabin grounds before its complete restoration in 2026.
