GFCI outlets are designed to protect things that are plugged into them or downstream of them from shocking people. Commonly required where water is present, they are not actually "waterproof"

Please don't wash them. If you do, you might let the magic black smoke out. Without the magic black smoke, electricity doesn't know what to do anymore and things get weird fast.

There's a LOT of magic smoke in these tiny little circuit board components.

Several homeowners in the Tustin and Irvine area the past couple weeks have expressed concerns about a rise in local thefts and break ins.

While a full blown wired surveillance system is definitely an option on the table, for most homeowners there isn't much advantage over more user friendly systems like the platform.

It's infinitely easy to customize and add components down the road, meaning there is no commitment to spend thousands of dollars right out the gate.

There's also no mistaking the sight of a Ring - visually active deterrents are the most effective method of securing your home.

Many homeowners won't even need an , depending on your existing and level of expertise.

On those occasions when a full hardwired system is needed, or some electrical customization is necessary, we can definitely tag in and get things squared away.

Often when going over a remodel with a customer, we run into the phrase "can't you just move that outlet over a bit?"

90% of the time, the answer is "no" - or at least not without re running wiring to or from another nearby junction box.

Outlets and switches often have wiring running to other outlets and switches. Inevitably, one direction will almost always be too short.

We explain this to the customer, and let them know to expect to have to rerun some wire, that way if we don't have to rerun wire - great! Regardless, the work is done right.

Often customers will say "I'm just going to have my GC/tile guy/painter/handyman take care of it. Down the road when things stop working, or worse, there's a fire because the splice hidden in the wall failed - we're always happy to fix it the right way, but it's a lot cheaper to start the right way and never need it fixed.

For things that arc, things that spark, and things that leave you in the dark - call Your Electrician.

It might not be necessary every year, but you should definitely get your service panels cleaned and inspected every few years.

Once they get like this bad things start happening, and replacing a panel will run you several thousand dollars, while cleaning a panel will run a couple hundred at worst.

There's a reason your handyman (or the other guy) is cheaper.

These buried connections were hidden behind a tile backsplash, and found in the course of doing some other work for the customer in their kitchen.

Connections fail, and when they're buried behind a wall expect to pay big money to get them found and repaired.

It's that time of year again when I get to meet a lot of two versions of customers...

The EV owners whose spouses surprised them with fancy new electric vehicles for Christmas. By February they are losing their minds, only able to drive the car every third or fourth day because it takes literally DAYS to charge the battery from a normal outlet.

And the EV owners who are about to get their tax return and want a spiffy new electric vehicle; and are proactively seeking information about getting a dedicated charging circuit to maximize their use.

Unfortunately, none of the three panels pictured gives us enough information to determine if a dedicated charging circuit can be added. Whether there is physical room for another circuit or not has zero bearing on the actual true electrical capacity of the panel.

To find the answer, a load calculation has to be performed that takes into account the size of the home, the average family usage, and any specific loads in the home already noted by the National Electric Code.

The dealerships won't talk about this side, as not having the capacity can turn a $500 dedicated circuit into a $5000 panel upgrade- and that can sway a person's decision to buy or not buy the electric vehicle.

The first thing you should do is consult an electrician to find out how much capacity is left in your electric panel. Many electricians out there will just slap additional circuits in w***y nilly, and if that's the case - call me to find out the right answer, or call your homeowners insurance to make sure you are covered for the fire that's coming with your car.

Out with the old, in with the new!

Got rid of the booblights and put in some sparkling exposed luminaire fixtures.

Client required a ceiling fan that "doesn't look like a ceiling fan" - sleek paddle design and DC motor moves a ton of air without being an eyesore.

So many violations, so little time.

This EV circuit was done by a guy who bid WAY less than me, and unfortunately the customers got exactly what they paid for, and I knew this was going to happen when they asked me to compete with his bid.

The phase marking of the conductors is not only wrong, but nonexistent.

There is no equipment grounding conductor at all.

While they did manage to oversize the conduit enough for the installation of a future 100A charging circuit, they failed to bother putting in the proper size junction box.

Luckily we get to put in a bid to make it right. Always cheaper to do it right the first time.

Most the time, when a customer says "I want to put in some track lighting" I tell them "no you dont" and I am right.

This customer was one of those few times when track lighting was used appropriately and in conjunction with other lighting to make a functional yet aesthetic space for schmoozing clients.

Fluorescent troffers provide ample general lighting illumination and make for great workspace capability, while a couple of pendants placed over the tables allow for the mood to be set when entertaining clients with lavish meals, and double as meeting tables when the track lighting can be used to highlight product during hard hitting sales meetings.
