WPS Meeting 10/12/17
Present: Aaron Duval, Ken Black, Earl Christian, Joe Costarella, Frankie Lindsey, Jean Pakos, Sue Ramdin, Phil Smith, Joe Seka, Tracy Steele, Jim Winger, Ken Yarwick, Dr. Rudy Rouweyha, Gary Whipple.
Steering Committee:
Miscellaneous: Tracy conducted a presentation on White Balance and Color Balance. Equal amounts of RGB values result in gray tones (127, 127, 127). White Balance is setting a pure white object in the screen to appear as pure white in the finished image. Color Balance is adjusting the tint/hue of the image to create a look that you want; such as more yellow or more blue.
Using Curves or Levels you can click on your GRAY eye dropper and click on an object that you expect to have been GRAY in your image. You can do the same with the White and Black eye dropperâs on their respective colors in the image.
You really do not want any portions of your image to have a value over 240 or less than 30. Values over 240 will end up as the color of the paper your printing on. With value less than 30 it will be all black ink and no detail.
Create a new layer. Edit Fill. Fill layer with 50% Gray in the pull-down window. This will put a gray layer overtop of the background layer. You can then change the blend mode to DIFFERENCE and it shows anything that was already gray as black. That allows you to see the gray point in your image.
You can then find an area in the image that looks black. Then do a color sample that appears black with the eyedropper. Erase the 50% gray layer. Then go back to curves and pick the gray eye dropper and pick within the circle that was created. That will white balance the image.
If the RGB mountainâs are close together it will be more color balanced. As the peaks move apart the tint of the image increases â away from color balance.
You can add a threshold layer above the 50% GRAY layer and adjust it to about 20 so that the blackest areas appear. You can then use your gray eyedropper and pick within your marker.
Tracy uses an ExpoDisc⢠that goes over the lens. You can then set your custom white balance with the ExpoDisc⢠(pointed to where you want to photograph). READ YOUR MANUAL and learn how to set a custom white balance.
You can use Formica chips or paint chips that are neutral gray to put into your image that you can then use to correct white balance in post processing. As the light changes in each image you shoot you will need to correct the white balance based upon that gray card or Formica chip.
DVD VIDEO: We watched a video by Joel Sartore â The Great Courses on Night Photography.
50/50 Raffle: The winner of the 50/50 was Joe Costarella. He won $19.00
