Our Founder, Kisha Bird, recently published a LinkedIn article, “Blessed Are Those Who Protect Our Children: Let Us Be the Adults We Needed.”

Drawing on personal experiences and years of work in social policy and youth development, she reflects on child protection, the importance of safe and supportive environments, and the responsibility we share as adults, educators, organizations, and communities.

In Ouidah, Benin, West African spiritual traditions offer a powerful expression of grief, remembrance, and the enduring connection between the living and the spirit world.

Rooted in Yoruba ancestral traditions practiced across West Africa, ceremonies associated with Àbíkú reflect spiritual beliefs surrounding childhood death and remembrance.

Through sacred masquerades, drumming, and ritual, parents and community members gather to mourn, honor, and maintain a spiritual connection with children who have passed away.

For participating families, these are not simply performances. They are sacred expressions of love, loss, community, and remembrance.

As we close out a dynamic celebration of International Day of the Girl Child 2026, we continue to shine a light on girls’ voices, their dreams, their rights, and their power to shape the future.

We are proud of the girls from Dawn Marie Sutherland who participated in this global collaboration with the International Black Women’s Public Policy Institute IBWPPI adding their voices, perspectives, and lived experiences to a global conversation advancing girls’ rights, gender equity, leadership, and opportunities for girls everywhere.
