What happens when fulfilling your mission requires breaking the rules you were taught to live by?
I’ve written a great deal about the Heroine’s Quest and what it takes to heed the Call to Adventure. This time, I’m writing from a much more personal place.
In this essay, I use the framework of the Heroine’s Quest to explore what happens when fulfilling your mission and living your life’s purpose require breaking out of a role that society and, sometimes more powerfully, your family system has assigned to you.
For decades, I have resisted the expectation that, as a woman, my time, emotional energy, and labor should remain available for the care of others, even while I am expected to support myself and pursue my own work.
I have tried to compromise, to answer the Call to Adventure and pursue my vision while keeping one foot planted in the Ordinary World, the familiar status quo of prescribed roles and expectations.
I am now confronting the emotional and physical toll of that compromise and a difficult truth: sometimes fulfilling your mission requires more than setting boundaries. It requires accepting that the system may *never* accommodate who you are, crossing the threshold anyway, and refusing to build the life you are meant to live out of whatever remains after everyone else has been served.
If any part of this struggle feels familiar, I invite you to read the full essay.
