They arrived at Versailles thinking they knew what to expect, but the experience turned out to be completely different. They had seen the Hall of Mirrors hundreds of times in photos. They expected gold, grand rooms, frescoes, and, of course, that feeling of standing inside one of Europe’s most famous palaces.

But as the tour went on, something started to shift. In the King’s Apartments, they stopped seeing the rooms as simply beautiful spaces. Their guide began pointing out details in the ceilings, paintings, symbols, and decoration, and each room started revealing something about the people who had lived there and the image they wanted to project.

Then they reached the Hall of Mirrors, but this time they weren’t just looking for the perfect photo. They already knew that this space had been the setting for celebrations, meetings, and major political events. Suddenly, everything that had seemed simply spectacular had context.

There are places that don’t make you think first about when to go. They make you think about who you want to go with. Cappadocia is one of them.
