Meandering Map LLC is a Latina owned, small business in the Washington, D.C. Metro Region.

Owner Jennifer Alvarez Franz is a University of Miami graduate (Go Canes!) with a law degree from The George Washington University Law School. Her first job at age 15 was a tour guide at The Las Vegas Natural History Museum, where her love of history and sharing knowledge sparked. After a rewarding career as a Federal labor and employee relations attorney, she opened Meandering Map as a way to share knowledge, build community and facilitate lifelong learning.

POV: A latina Las Vegas girl seeing a latino Vegas artist in Washington, DC. Capilla de Maíz, or the Maíz Chapel, celebrates the role of “yellow gold” in indigenous, Latino, and American culture. It is on display only for a little longer, through September 7th. Experience this at the Renwick Gallery, free daily, 10:00-5:30pm.

Have you seen this piece, The People’s House: A Quilt of White House History, by Charles Fazzino? Pop Art with the essence of an Americana quilt, it captures snapshots of the White House and role of the American Presidency. Honestly, you can probably stand in front of it for an hour and still notice new moments. The People’s House is run by the White House Historical Association (which began with Jackie Kennedy). It’s an interactive and unique look at the White House, that is free with reserved tickets online. Definitely worth a visit (also, it is only a couple minute walk to get a view of the White House from the museum!). You can even join it up with the White House Visitors Center, a tour of the Decatur House, and a look at St. John’s church if you want a White House themed day!

POV: Finding a place to take a breath in central Washington, DC. I adore museums, but sometimes you need a break in between stops! I love how so many spaces in DC have incorporated spots to decompress after exhibits which are particularly powerful. However, not all museums have those spaces. There is a spot next to the National Museum of Asian Art, where there is shade, plenty of whimsical plants, benches and tables. It is truly a perfect space for a snack, book, or even meditation. To find it just walk next to the wall of the museum that is closest to the Smithsonian Castle in the Enid Haupt Garden. They even have garden tours every Wed and Fri!

Have you seen, “So You Want to See The President!” at the People’s House? Norman Rockwell was commissioned by Stephen Early (FDR’s Press Secretary), to create art of moments of people waiting to speak to the President during WW2. It is on display at the People’s House! Open 7 days a week, 9-5, and tickets required (but free!!). Also, fun fact, did you know the famous Saturday Evening Post depiction of Rosie the Riveter, was painted by Norman Rockwell?

Group tour is obviously close to my heart, but sometimes it is fun to go on a solo adventure! Congressional Cemetery has these awesome self-guided tour routes that you can take solo (or with some friends!). It is an easy, and insightful way to visit the cemetery. They provide tours centered around indigenous individuals, the Civil War, women, and so much more. You can grab them in this cute box at the entrance of the cemetery, or also download them in advance from their website! Also, if you are feeling a group tour itch, they have many programs they host monthly listed on their website! I visited not long ago for a tour centered on women of the Civil War and it did not disappoint! Def check them out!

Weekend in Pittsburgh! Only 4 hours from DC, Pittsburgh is an awesome weekend trip from the DMV. Here are some of the highlights from my visit! 1. The interior of a trolley car at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. 2. A visit to Pennsylvania Macaroni Company to stock up on pastas and Italian goods! 3-5. Hanging at PNC park, when one player alone had 10 RBIs! 6. Stayed at the William Penn for a little history fun. 7. Had my fav pancakes at Pamela’s along with chorizo hash. 8. Got a membership to the National Aviary and got to see a new resident of the aviary, a Harpy Eagle! 9. Enjoyed icees, hand shaved (obv I got watermelon, the best flavor). 10-15. An amazing visit to the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum! Loved their exhibits on women in the Trolley industry.16. Last, but def not least, hot dogs and fries with gravy at Shorty’s!

Had a fun visit to the Lincoln Undercroft the end of June! It is amazing to see the structures underneath this beautiful memorial! The museum includes a short video projected on the massive columns, exhibits about the 13th Amendment and Emancipation Proclamation, information about how the structure was built and carved, and the stories of several amazing women with significant ties to the Memorial! You can get tickets at recreation.gov (just search for the Lincoln Undercroft). They are available 30 days in advance at 11am. If you don’t have luck grabbing them then, another batch gets released at 4pm for the next day! And if that doesn’t work, visit the information desk between the Korean Memorial and Lincoln, the day of, where up to 6 tickets are distributed per person at 8:45am (def get in line early though!). Always double check this info at the official site in case of any changes to the process! Music for video is Building a Treehouse by As Tall as Pine 🧡

POV: An evening prepping for an America 250 symphony at Warner Theater 🧡 Magical to watch students take the stage at this historic and beautiful theater! Tons of fun introducing this group to my city! Fun fact: the tunnel under the stage at Warner has kisses from performers on the wall 💋Last picture is a view of Freedom Plaza from the backstage production room.
