After four days in the northwest doing our research and visiting friends we took the train down along the Rhine and stayed in one of my favorite places for the next few days. Spent time on a Rhine cruise counting off the Castles and then took train home stopping in a couple of "cute" Rhineland villages. Another day we took the boat down the river to tour the only castle in Germany that was never breached. Marksburg Castle. We had wonderful days before heading to Frankfurt for last night and then home.

Some years ago I was in Germany when these mills were open and was able to climb up in one. Where we just were in NW Germany is on the "Mill Road" and my friend Nancy was also allowed to climb up in a windmill.

P.s. it was also the first time I had butter kuchen. 😊

It's Pfingstmontag, although not all events are religion related, today is also Deutscher Mühlentag, German Mill Day... sails and water wheels are turning, grinding flour, mustard seeds and corn.

And reviving the old cultural technique of milling.

"Die Freundin des Windes" lying directly alongside the Elbe river in Hollern-Twielenfleth, is still used commercially and a windmill unique in Altes Land.

In 1818 the windmill that stood here from 1331 blew over in a storm, its newly built replacement burned down to the foundation walls in 1847, and one year later this Galerie-Holländer was built.

With Venti Amica written on its roof. Friend of the Wind.

And it is still there in Altes Land, just outside Hamburg in northern Germany, surrounded by fruit trees and producing freshly ground flour.

Pentecost Monday, Whit Monday, is a public holiday in Germany, and also a day when windmills of all sizes, together with their ancient traditional agricultural tools and machinery, open their doors to the public.

A couple days was all about "me". Went to Osnabruck archive and found some family in an 1811 census. Helped to prove something I was stuck on. A friend drove me to a couple of my hometowns, Bockhorst and Hoerste, visited a friend in Bockhorst and went to a museum in Hoerste I hadn't been too before. Showing how folks lived in that little village. Also went to Borgholzhausen, to visit a favorite shop, Cafe Schulze, kind of an outlet store for Lebkuchen and other candy. And of course we had Koffee und Kuchen.

Returned a few days ago from a private tour to Northwest Germany with a friend. So nice to see a lot of my friends from up that way and visited a few new places this time. One was a Herring fisherman museum. Was interesting to learn that many young men living way inland in Niedersachsen and Westphalia often went away from May - November to work on the North sea fishing for herring.

BREAKING NEWS! - haha trying to get your attention. I was too late to get rooms booked for a Christmas market tour in 2026 (river cruises are much smaller ships and you must decide fast, as I learned) So I have booked space on the Christmastime on the Danube in 2027 Dec. 15 - 21st to get the best price - $3365.00. We will cruise from Vienna through Austria to Germany ending in Regensburg, Germany. I hope to spend a few days pre-trip in Vienna. I have about 10 spaces saved for these rooms at this price so if you are interested, get in touch I will send you more information.

Happy New Year! Another year has flown by and I luckily, topped it off with a fantastic Christmas Market River Cruise through Switzerland, France and Germany. It was just magical. Even though we didn't have snow (like in 2023) it was super. Sorry for the # of pictures but each one brought such fun memories. Thinking of the Danube (Austria and Germany) next year?

Next is one of my favorite days - Cooking Class with the very charming chef at Montese Cooking Experience, Mauro. It is a day of learning the fun way to make pasta, sauce, bread and dessert with a big dose of wine. Weather was fantastic, scenery gorgeous, company fun and our dinner was delish!

We just returned from another fabulous group tour to Tuscany.. weather fantastic and a fun group. First day we pay our respects to the American WW2 soldiers buried at American cemetery outside Florence Italy. We stay for the lowering of the Flag, playing of taps and having any veterans on the group help fold the flag. Very moving ceremony.
