Did you know Irish is the official language of Ireland?

English may be what you'll hear most often while traveling around Ireland, but Irish (Gaeilge) is the country's first official language... and you'll see it everywhere, especially on road signs, government buildings and throughout the Gaeltacht regions where Irish remains an important part of everyday community life.
And here's a fun one you'll encounter almost immediately: Fáilte (FAWL-cha)... meaning "Welcome"
It's one of my favorite Irish words because, in many ways, it describes something Ireland does exceptionally well. Whether you're walking into a small-town pub, chatting with someone behind a counter, or asking a local a question that somehow turns into a 15-minute conversation, Irish hospitality is very real.

So if you've ever wondered what that word you've seen on Irish signs and souvenirs actually means... it means "Welcome!"
