On September 18th, a Central Florida family experienced a private Kennedy Space Center tour, donated by Galactic Medallion as the top prize from the inaugural Cheers to Kindness fundraiser.

This day wasn’t just about rockets and history—it was about kindness carried forward. Thanks to Elisabeth A. Schneider, CEO of Galactic Medallion and Vice President of the Board at Fostering Kindness, the family’s return to the Cape became a reminder of how community generosity can inspire foster youth and strengthen families.

Through programs like My Special Place in Space, we’re showing how compassion and curiosity can open doors to brighter futures.

✨ Small acts create lasting impact.

NGC 7027: The Pillow Planetary Nebula
NGC 7027, also known as the Pillow Nebula and Flying Carpet Nebula, is a strikingly small and bright planetary nebula located about 3,000 light years away in the constellation Cygnus. It began expanding into a unique shape around 600 years ago, displaying blue shells from its earlier history alongside newer brown gas and dust ejections that form a curious four-cornered pattern. The center of NGC 7027 remains a mystery, with one theory suggesting it houses a binary star system where one star feeds gas onto an erratic disk orbiting its companion. Initially discovered in 1878, this nebula can be observed with a standard backyard telescope, inviting awe at its unusual beauty and complexity.

Galaxies, Stars, and Dust
This telescopic view captures a full moon against the backdrop of the constellation Pegasus and the Milky Way. Bright stars reveal diffraction spikes from telescope supports, while faint clouds of interstellar dust, known as galactic cirrus, softly reflect the Milky Way's light. The diffuse cloud MBM 54, less than a thousand light-years away, fills the scene, and nearby lies the spiral galaxy NGC 7497, seen edge-on at about 60 million light-years distant. Its spiral arms and dust lanes mirror the beauty of our own galaxy's stars and dust, inviting wonder about the vastness beyond us.

The Meteor and the Star Cluster
In al-Ula, Saudi Arabia, a long exposure of the Pleiades star cluster (M45) unexpectedly captured a bright meteor streaking across the sky. While such images often include distractions like airplane trails or lens flares, this meteor stood out, creating a striking green glow from vaporized metals amid the famous blue stars and surrounding dust. It's a reminder of the wonders that the universe can reveal when we look closely.

A Tale of Two Nebulae
In the vibrant constellation of Lyra, the Ring Nebula (M57) showcases a bright central ring, a remnant of a dying sun-like star, surrounded by faint halos. Although it appears similar in size to the barred spiral galaxy IC 1296 nearby, M57 is only 2,000 light-years away, while IC 1296 lies a staggering 200 million light-years from us. This remarkable contrast reveals that while both objects share a visual field, they are vastly different in scale and distance, inviting us to ponder the complexities of the cosmos.

Giant Galaxies in Pavo
NGC 6872, the largest known spiral galaxy, spans over 500,000 light-years, making it five times larger than our Milky Way. Located about 200 million light-years away in the southern constellation Pavo, its sprawling spiral arms resemble the wings of a giant condor, earning it the nickname "Condor galaxy." These arms are filled with vibrant, young star clusters and are shaped by past gravitational interactions with the smaller galaxy IC 4970. This awe-inspiring galaxy is part of a larger group that includes the dominant elliptical galaxy NGC 6876, creating a stunning cosmic scene.

Trapezium: In the Heart of Orion
At the heart of Orion lies the Trapezium, a cluster of four bright stars within the Orion Nebula. These stars, particularly the prominent Theta-1 Orionis C, emit ultraviolet radiation that illuminates the nebula's vibrant glow. Approximately three million years old, the cluster may harbor a black hole over 100 times the mass of the Sun, formed from stellar collisions in its youth. This black hole could account for the rapid motion of the Trapezium stars, making the Orion Nebula, located about 1,500 light-years away, a fascinating proximity to such cosmic mysteries.

Zodiacal Road
The strange light you see is zodiacal light, a band of dust from the inner Solar System that reflects sunlight, visible just after sunset or before sunrise. This dust likely comes from faint Jupiter-family comets spiraling toward the Sun. A stunning example of this phenomenon appeared while climbing to Teide National Park in Spain on June 21, 2019, where a bright triangle of zodiacal light graced the horizon, accompanied by the bright star Regulus and the Beehive Star Cluster (M44) immersed in its glow.
