Walking inside Hagia Sophia in Istanbul feels like stepping back nearly 1,500 years! 🇹🇷✨ The enormous dome, marble columns, and beautiful mosaics make you stop and wonder how something this magnificent was built so long ago.
Its name means “Holy Wisdom.” Completed in 537 AD under Emperor Justinian I, Hagia Sophia was built as a Christian cathedral in Constantinople—what we now call Istanbul. For nearly 900 years, it served as a major center of Christian worship, primarily in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, with a period as a Roman Catholic cathedral.
After the Ottoman conquest in 1453, it became a mosque. It opened as a museum in 1935 and returned to being a mosque in 2020.
One of the most fascinating things is seeing the layers of its religious history within the same building. Christian mosaics depicting Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and other sacred figures survive alongside enormous Islamic calligraphy panels. Many mosaics were covered for centuries and later uncovered through restoration.
As a Catholic, seeing these ancient images of Jesus and Mary adds another level of meaning to the visit. ❤️ Just imagining the generations who have prayed beneath this dome is powerful.
