Siskiyou County in fall is a whole region to explore. Chase waterfalls at McCloud Falls and Hedge Creek Falls in Dunsmuir, walk the mountain towns of McCloud, Mount Shasta, W**d, and Yreka, and wander out to Scott Valley and Etna. Paddle or picnic at Lake Siskiyou, follow the Klamath River, and keep Mount Shasta in view the whole way. Every stop is its own kind of fall weekend.

The Montague Hot Air Balloon Fair is taking over the skies near Mount Shasta September 18–20, 2026 — and this is one Northern California weekend you need on your calendar.

Now celebrating its 28th year, this small-town tradition fills the Shasta Valley sky with colorful hot air balloons at sunrise, with Mount Shasta creating one seriously unreal backdrop.
