In the sun-baked hills around Nelson Ghost Town, Tony had two hobbies that seemed perfectly reasonable to him and completely baffling to everyone else: collecting old trucks and admiring mountain scenery. The result was a yard that looked like a retirement village for rusty pickups, each one parked at what Tony insisted was the “best scenic overlook.” Visitors would ask whether he was restoring the trucks, and Tony would gesture grandly at the mountains and say, “They’re restoring me.” By sunset, he could spend an hour debating which had more character, a dented 1948 flatbed or the jagged ridgeline behind it. The trucks never moved, the mountains never changed, and somehow Tony still claimed the collection was “coming along nicely.”

In Nelson Ghost Town, Nevada, the dust doesn’t settle. It signs a lease. Every rusty truck, crooked shack, and sun-baked mining relic seems to be competing for the title of “Most Likely to Turn Into Sand.” The rust clings to old cars like they’re wearing orange tuxedos to a very late Wild West reunion, while the desert wind strolls through town rearranging dust with the confidence of an interior decorator. Somewhere near the old mining works, a pickup truck has probably been rusting so long it’s halfway through becoming a geological feature. Nelson’s history is full of gold miners, outlaws, and enough lawlessness to make a sheriff reconsider his career choice, but today the loudest troublemakers are dust and rust, locked in an endless duel to see which one can swallow the town first.

In Nelson, Nevada, the old trucks don’t look abandoned so much as retired celebrities. They sit scattered around the ghost town like a convention of rusty grandpas, each one silently insisting it hauled something important back in 1947. Their paint has peeled into abstract desert art, their fenders wear dents like campaign medals, and every windshield seems to be squinting suspiciously at tourists with smartphones. The trucks are so cool that you half expect one to cough to life, grumble about gas being 19 cents a gallon, and roll off toward the old mines. Against the backdrop of weathered buildings and mining relics, these vintage vehicles have become part of Nelson’s charm, turning the town into a giant outdoor museum where even the rust has personality.

Even in the middle of nowhere, out past the last mailbox, the last gas station, and the last hint of civilization, Meadview still has a 25 mph speed limit. You can be driving through miles of open desert with more cacti than people, yet there it is: a perfectly serious sign telling you to slow down. Not because there’s traffic. Not because pedestrians are pouring into the streets. But because somewhere, somehow, someone looked at this vast expanse of rocks, dust, and tumbleweeds and thought, “You know what this place needs? Stricter speed control.” It’s the kind of town where you can count the buildings on one hand, but the speed limit is watching you like it’s downtown Manhattan.

Maybe the Joshua trees in Meadview never got the memo about staying modest. While their cousins in Joshua Tree National Park pose dramatically for postcards and album covers, the Meadview crowd seems to have quietly spent decades bulking up like desert bodybuilders. You drive through expecting the usual spiky silhouettes, and suddenly a Joshua tree looms over the road looking as if it pays property taxes and has opinions about zoning regulations. It’s entirely possible that the trees in Meadview aren’t actually bigger, but after seeing a few towering specimens, your brain starts whispering conspiracy theories: perhaps the park trees are just better at publicity, while the Meadview trees have been out there growing in peace, adding branches and height with the confidence of retirees who no longer care what anyone thinks.

In Meadview, there’s a cactus with pink flowers that looks like it got dressed for a desert gala and forgot it’s supposed to be a plant. While every other cactus is standing around in practical shades of “dust” and “slightly darker dust,” this show-off is waving bright pink blossoms like it’s accepting an award for Best Supporting Succulent. The local lizards seem unimpressed, the tumbleweeds keep rolling past without applause, and the cactus just stands there, covered in spikes and flowers, projecting the energy of a bouncer who secretly moonlights as a wedding decorator.

I took the school bus to Area 51 because the flyer said they needed a gardener and I figured extraterrestrials probably appreciate a well-maintained hedge. The bus driver did not ask questions, which felt either professional or deeply alarming. At the gate, a security guard wearing sunglasses at 2 a.m. handed me a rake that hummed softly and pointed toward a rose garden where every flower turned to stare when I walked by. My interview consisted of identifying which shrubs were invasive and which were senior staff. I accidentally complimented a cactus that turned out to be the regional manager. They offered me the position after I successfully watered a fern that had escaped gravity three times. The benefits package included dental, unlimited juice boxes, and one emergency teleport per fiscal quarter.

We drove 13 miles up a dirt road that looked less like a route and more like a dare issued by the desert itself. Every bump convinced us we were one rattlesnake away from uncovering intergalactic secrets, a hidden hangar, or at minimum an alien vending machine. The suspense grew with each mile until we finally reached the legendary Area 51 front gate… only to be greeted by a single warning sign radiating the enthusiasm of a tax form, and one unexpectedly adorable Joshua tree standing nearby like a tiny desert receptionist. After all that, the tree had more personality than the classified military installation.
