Around Easter last year, I enjoyed exploring Monrovia's slums, together with my good friend and local host, Windell S. King
This smiling remarkable young man is one of the 2 founders of the organization Four Hunger, a nonprofit humanitarian organization with the mission to provide food and clean water to the poor communities of the West Point.
At that time, 27 drinking water pumps were supplied to the community, and just a few months later, the entire project was successfully completed!!! 👏👏
Probably it sounds strange, as clean water is something many of us take for granted. However, from my own experience, after spending one month in Sierra Leone and Liberia without access to running water, you truly understand that for those who are left to their fate, nothing in life is guaranteed.

🇱🇷 A photo tour of West Point, Liberia's largest slum and one of the biggest in Africa.

This bustling settlement is home to around 75.000 souls, situated on a narrow, man-made sand peninsula within the capital Monrovia, on the Atlantic Ocean.
The densely populated community faces lots of significant issues, including poverty, severe coastal erosion & waste disposal, high criminality, drug use and gang activity and insufficient basic sanitation leading to waterborne illnesses, such as cholera.
🤯 I visited the slum 2 times, initially with my local friend Windell S. King (more on my next post), and the next day alone.
I made sure to stay alert and avoided exploring too far into the interior of the peninsula, given its reputation for being extremely dangerous.
A stroll around the street markets though, was a pleasant experience, and I found the locals to be unexpectedly welcoming, much like the people I'd encountered across the entire country.

*TRAVEL STORIES FROM THE ROAD*

Travel offers more than having fun and collecting sunsets. For many of us, it's also a fantastic way to learn about history, geography and culture. Often, talking to locals and hearing their stories stays with you more than any photograph.

So this is the story behind the post:
It is widely known that during the Liberian civil wars (1989–2003), many villages and rural communities experienced extensive massacres committed by different armed groups. Having this in mind and during my stay in Gbarnga, I was trying to visit one of those villages. While walking around the town I entered randomly a police station to ask for information. The staff was so kind that they offered me a police officer to take me on his motorcycle to a village situated on the outskirts of the town.
After driving for about an hour through the lush rainforest of northern Liberia, we arrived in Kpolokpalah. This was the place where, in 1994 during the First Liberian Civil War, between 300 and 500 local residents and people who had to leave their homes were were brutally massacred. The community members greeted me warmly and showed me around their village, sharing their terrible story:

☠️ "Attackers dressed as enemy soldiers caught many locals who were seeking safety, they led them out of their houses and violently killed them on a rock using machetes and cutlasses. The victims' blood flowed from the rock all the way to the creek we had crossed before entering the town......."
A mass reburial and memorial plaque were later placed inside a traditional palava hut to honor the people who died, while survivors keep trying to get justice for the terrible things done during the war.

❗️This was just one of many incredibly precious moments during my unforgettable journey through West Africa. I left the village feeling sad but incredibly grateful for the chance to connect with locals and hear stories about their past.

🌴 While heading to Kpatawee waterfall by a hired motorbike, we passed by a small community with colorful mud houses. As it was my first encounter with this kind of street art, I decided to stop to take some photos and engage with the locals.
Even though English is Liberia's official language, most of that community members did not speak English, as many tribes have their own indigenous languages. Fortunately, my motorcycle driver helped us understand each other, since I was very curious about those murals and had lots of questions.
They told me it's their custom to decorate the outside of their houses by hand, but the patters were random and didn't mean anything.

🏡 I found the paintings very cute and everyone to be genuinely warm and inviting, contrary to the popular rumors about Liberians being unkind or dangerous. 🤦‍♀️

🏞 Kpatawee Waterfall is considered one of the country's most beautiful waterfalls, situated deep within the lush rainforests of northern Liberia. Though it remains a pristine and uncrowded sanctuary, it is highly popular among the locals.
The location is approximately a 30min drive from Gbarnga, the capital of B**g County, or about a 3-hour journey by car from Monrovia.
I spent two nights in Gbarnga and hired a motorcycle for a day-long expedition to enjoy the spectacular waterfall.
The trip through the jungle, along its rough and unpaved roads, was truly wonderful.
The waterfall area is quite well-maintained, as there's even a lodge available for overnight stays. There are actually two distinct cascades; the first is easily accessible from the road, while the second requires about an hour's hike. I chose to visit only the lower one, to relax and swim in its natural pools, as I was feeling a little bit lazy for the hour-long trek.

North Liberia offers spectacular natural beauty, but its infrastructure is quite underdeveloped, so just be prepared for a raw adventure completely lacking modern comforts. 🇱🇷

🇱🇷 Robertsport is an excellent location to relax before you travel into Liberia's deep jungles or its bustling capital.

You can surf or swim in the Atlantic Ocean, enjoy amazing sunsets right on the shore, trek up to the famous old shipwreck, and soak up the genuine local atmosphere in the main village.

Honestly, those three days camping by the sea & under the stars were, without a doubt, the absolute highlight of my entire journey through Liberia!

When I was dreaming of my trip to Sierra Leone and Liberia last year, my initial plan was to share my 30 days evenly between the two countries.
I was already aware that many visitors had faced different issues in Liberia and didnt stay for long. While I was traveling around Sierra Leone, many people suggested I shorten my stay because the country is generally considered unsafe. They mentioned many criminal groups and unfriendly locals, not just in specific urban areas like the notorious West Point slums of the capital, but throughout the country.
So, I changed my plans and decided to stay 20 days in Sierra Leone and 9 days in western Liberia. However, upon entering Liberia on foot from Sierra Leone, I discovered the stories people told about Liberians weren't 100% true!!
Overall, I had an amazing time exploring beautiful beaches, local communities, isolated villages, lovely waterfalls & ghost shipwrecks, while I met incredibly friendly people (Fulanis too!) in numerous unexpected circumstances.

❗️To be clear, Liberia isn't as secure as Sierra Leone, and there were moments I felt uneasy. BUT, most people were kind, helpful, and very protective!
So...let's discover more about this underrated country and clear up some rumors in my upcoming posts.

Με αφορμή την πρόσφατη συνέντευξή μου στην Parallaximag ως solo γυναίκα ταξιδιώτισσα, και τα άσχημα σχόλια που δέχτηκα, κυρίως από άντρες....
γιατί ως γνωστόν, δεν περνάς καλά σε ταξίδι εάν δεν σε εκμεταλλευτούν σεξουαλικά, ή είσαι πολύ τυχερή που αναπνέεις ακόμα και δε σε βρήκαν κομμάτια σε κανένα χαντάκι!! 🤔🤔
