Uzbekistan’s grapes: a taste worth traveling for.

At the autumn bazaars of Samarkand and Fergana, grapes are sold in dozens of varieties, and almost every one is a local legend. The «Khusayne» variety—known here as «Lady’s Fingers»—melts in the mouth with honey-like sweetness. *Kishmish* grapes are sun-dried to become golden raisins.

The pink «Taifi» variety is crisp and keeps well into winter; «Nimrang» carries the scent of the Fergana Valley sun; and the dark «Charas» is as rich and thick as fruit preserves. Samarkand breeders named the «Rizamat» variety after a legendary viticulturist.

The best time to experience this abundance is from August to October. Visit the Chorsu Bazaar in Tashkent or the Siab Bazaar in Samarkand and taste a single berry from each bunch.
