April 29 is International Dance Day 💃🏻

And right around that time, Khiva comes alive: from April 26 to 30, it hosts the Lazgi Festival ✨

The perfect excuse to discover Uzbekistan’s rich dance traditions. There are three main dance schools: Bukhara, Khorezm, and Fergana.

💃🏻 Khorezm
Energy, intensity, and sharp, precise movements—with no spins. The Khorezmian Lazgi dance is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

💃🏻 Bukhara
Passion and fluidity: gentle sways with a focus on expressive hand and upper-body movements.

💃🏻 Fergana
Lyricism and grace: light steps, elegance, and airy costumes.

Among the steppes between Nukus and Khiva stands Chilpyk, one of the most ancient and mysterious monuments in Uzbekistan.

It dates back to the 1st century BC, when Zoroastrianism — one of the world’s oldest religions — flourished in these lands.

Chilpyk served as a dakhma, a special funerary structure where bodies were exposed to the elements after death so as not to defile the earth. It was believed that in this way, a person returned to the natural cycle of life without disturbing the harmony of the world.

Over the centuries, Chilpyk used to be rebuilt several times: after the Arab conquest in the 7th century and during the flourishing of Ancient Khorezm in the 9th–10th centuries. In the 20th century, the monument was rediscovered by archaeologists and recognized as an important testament to the spiritual history of the region.

4 facts about Kokand that will surprise you 🔥

🔹 In the 19th century, Kokand was known as “the city of mosques” — there were more than 300! One of the main mosques that has survived to this day is the Jami Mosque (late 18th – early 19th centuries), part of the architectural complex on Chorsu Square.

🔹 The residence of Khudoyarkhan, the last ruler of the Kokand Khanate, was built by more than 16,000 people. The finest craftsmen worked on its mosaics, carvings, and paintings — and the palace continues to captivate visitors to this day.

🔹 Kokand is the birthplace of the “Uzbek Shakespeare,” poet Mukimi, a classic of Uzbek literature, as well as Hamza Hakimzade Niyazi, the founder of Uzbek Soviet literature.

🔹 Kokand is a city of artisans. Craftsmen here still produce carved wooden chests and intricate ganch using Silk Road-era techniques. In 2019, Kokand became the first city in the CIS to be named a World City of Craftsmen. In September 2025, it will host the International Craft Festival.

6 Brightest Festivals of Uzbekistan in 2025

🔹 Stikhiya ("Elements") Festival
📅 May 29–31 | 📍 Muynak, Karakalpakstan

Where else can you dance to techno among rusty ships in the middle of the dried-up Aral Sea? Stikhiya is our answer to Burning Man: three days of wild music, art installations, and total freedom.

🔹 Sakhro Bakhshilari
📅 May 22 | 📍 Khatyrchi District, Navoi

Bakhshi are musicians and guardians of ancient legends, singing ballads of love, heroism, and wisdom. The festival is held in the park named after poet Amirkul Pulkan, where many folk songs are said to have originated.

🔹 Namangan Flower Festival
📅 May 25 – June 29 | 📍 Babur Park, Namangan

Eight hectares of breathtaking floral displays! But the highlight is the parade of flower-adorned cars, which begins at the airport and makes its way to the park to the delighted cheers of the crowd.

🔹 Strongman
📅 June–August | 📍 Ichan-Kala, Khiva

Here, it’s not just about building muscle — it’s about competing in the spirit of ancient warriors. Against the backdrop of minarets and madrasahs, athletes lift weights, pull ropes, and prove who the true pahlavon (“strongman”)is. All around are fairs, concerts, and the atmosphere of a real celebration.

🔹 Silk and Spices
📅 June 6–8 | 📍 Bukhara

For three days, Bukhara transforms into a city straight out of One Thousand and One Nights: bustling bazaars with spices and silks, street chefs cooking pilaf using ancient recipes, and performers in traditional costumes parading through the squares.

🔹 Kovun Sayli
📅 August 8–10 | 📍 Khiva

120 (!) varieties of Uzbek melons — from the honey-sweet Gurvak to the crunchy Borikalla. Taste them all with no limits, and enjoy tightrope walking shows and traditional folk dances.

🔹 Art Biennale
📅 September 5 – November 20 | 📍 Bukhara

The first international biennale set within Bukhara’s historic landmarks. The 2025 theme is “Recipes for Broken Hearts”, inspired by the legend of Ibn Sina creating pilaf to heal a love-stricken prince. If you enjoy modern art with an Eastern twist, mark this on your fall calendar.
