The Uzbek tubeteika is one of the country’s most iconic symbols.
The most recognizable style is the Chust men’s cap — easy to spot with its black fabric and white embroidery. The four elements in the pattern are believed to protect the wearer from all directions, while the pepper-shaped motifs symbolize protection and prosperity.

Each region has its own traditions:
🔹 Bukhara: gold and silver embroidery reflecting elegance and high status
🔹 Andijan: light-toned women’s caps with vibrant floral designs

Among the steppes between Nukus and Khiva stands Chilpyk, one of the most ancient and mysterious monuments in Uzbekistan.

It dates back to the 1st century BC, when Zoroastrianism — one of the world’s oldest religions — flourished in these lands.

Chilpyk served as a dakhma, a special funerary structure where bodies were exposed to the elements after death so as not to defile the earth. It was believed that in this way, a person returned to the natural cycle of life without disturbing the harmony of the world.

Over the centuries, Chilpyk used to be rebuilt several times: after the Arab conquest in the 7th century and during the flourishing of Ancient Khorezm in the 9th–10th centuries. In the 20th century, the monument was rediscovered by archaeologists and recognized as an important testament to the spiritual history of the region.
