Always a sad day when the trip ends and you have 3 hours of motoring straight into 20 knot winds and large seas back to the base. It just so happened the weather was not cooperating. However, hanging out in all the beautiful places surrounding Culebra was definitely worth it! Back on a ball at the base, cleaning up and planning our return and next trip! Thanks CYOA staff for keeping Counting Stars in such great condition so we and other charter guests can continue to enjoy her and the wonderful islands.

Last night before heading back to base was spent in Bahia Mosquito. It was quite windy but we found an area tucked around the point to stay the night. The anchorage was a little rolly and we would only recommend if there is a breeze. Lucky for us, there were no mosquitos like its name!

The next day we had a downwind sail to Playa Melones anchorage and picked up one of two balls. Snorkeled the area and found that it sustained a little damage to the fans from the storm but all in all, it looked fantastic. Fish were plentiful. We headed in to Dewey in Ensenada Honda late afternoon to check out Dinghy Dock and Zaco's Tacos. Dinghy Dock was not open yet- grand reopening May 22nd and Zaco's Tacos just happened to be closed the day we were there. Oh well, we found an excellent cut of meat called churrasco- like skirt steak to have for steak fajitas at Milka Grocery in town. Highly recommend!

The next two nights were spent in Culebrita which was the highlight of the trip. We had been there before but often the swells come in at night during the winter months that make the anchorage untenable. Not this time! There are 5 mooring balls and the anchorage and beach are in great condition. The vegetation and lighthouse also survived the hurricanes very well. First night, just us- when do you ever get that experience again? Second night just us and one other boat.

Then it was off to Culebra from St. Croix. 46 nm mile sail. Winds 20 knots, seas 8-10 feet. It was a fun downwind sail. We averaged about 8 knots in a little over 6 hours. Fished the whole way two handlines and one rod and only landed a barracuda. Too much sargassum everywhere. Checked into customs and immigration in Dewey by phone and then off to Bahia de Almodovar for the night.

We then headed to Buck Island Reef National Monument, St. Croix. We had applied for a special use permit from the national park service to anchor there for the night before we left and we anchored behind West Beach. During the day local boats were there but for the first night we were alone in the anchorage. Second night just us and one other boat. Too bad it was too windy to snorkel. We took our dinghy around to check out the snorkeling trail but it was too choppy. Maybe next time. Beautiful clear water.
