Where We Eat on St. Croix: 5 of Our Favorites 🌴

One of the things we love about St. Croix is its surprisingly diverse dining scene. You can have a sophisticated dinner in a historic Christiansted building one evening and enjoy fresh seafood in your flip-flops overlooking Cane Bay the next.

We’ve just published a new Oceans Journal article featuring five restaurants we return to again and again:

🍸 AMA at Cane Bay — Our favorite for a special evening by the water.

The view doesn’t stop at the door. 🌊

Inside Oceans, soaring wood ceilings, sunlit spaces, and natural textures bring a little warmth to island living. And wherever you settle in, the Caribbean is never far from sight.

Morning coffee with the doors open. A leisurely breakfast at the kitchen counter. An afternoon with nowhere in particular to be.

This is what feeling at home in paradise looks like.

There’s more to St. Croix than beaches. 🌿

Tucked into 16 lush acres, SGVBG Botanical Garden is one of our favorite places to discover a different side of the island.

Here, more than 1,000 Caribbean and tropical plants grow among the buildings and ruins of historic Estate St. George — land with a history stretching from an Indigenous settlement dating to around 100 A.D. to an 18th-century Danish sugar plantation.

But it was the trees that stopped us in our tracks.

The towering kapok, with its enormous buttress roots, is almost impossible to capture in a photograph. And nearby is another remarkable specimen: an African baobab more than 150 years old. That’s the one we’re standing beside in the last photo.

St. George is beautiful, fascinating and wonderfully peaceful — the kind of place that rewards wandering slowly and looking a little closer.

Driving on St. Croix is part of the adventure. 🌴

Yes, we drive on the left. Yes, most of the cars have the steering wheel on the left, too. And yes, it feels a little strange at first.

But give it a day and you’ll be navigating the island like a local — potholes, scenic detours and all.

There’s even a wonderful book about island life called Life in the Left Lane — a title that captures St. Croix remarkably well. Yes, we drive on the left. But getting around the island also has a rhythm, etiquette and personality all its own.

Golden hour at Ama is one of our favorite ways to begin an evening on St. Croix.

Just down the North Shore from Oceans, Ama sits right at the water’s edge — close enough that the waves become part of dinner.

We like to arrive before sunset, order a cocktail and settle in. The menu changes, the seafood is excellent, and somewhere between the first drink and dessert, daylight disappears over the Caribbean.

It’s the kind of dinner we never particularly want to end.

Our tip: Go before sunset. Sit in the grotto. Have a drink. Don’t rush.

You can’t spend much time on St. Croix without encountering a Mocko Jumbie.

Towering above the crowd on stilts, Mocko Jumbies are one of the most recognizable traditions of the Virgin Islands. Their roots reach back to West African masquerade traditions, where stilt walkers were associated with spirits and protection from evil.

Today, you’ll see them at festivals, parades and celebrations across St. Croix — dancing on stilts that can put them more than 10 feet above the ground. Watching them move so effortlessly is part of the magic.

They’re colorful, joyful and unmistakably Crucian — and no matter how many times we see them, we still stop to watch.

Some St. Croix days are for exploring. Others are for going absolutely nowhere.

Morning coffee in the pool. Maybe a swim.

Maybe a book. Eventually, we might decide what to do with the rest of the day.

Or maybe not.

We highly recommend leaving a little room in your St. Croix itinerary for nothing at all. 🌴
