Welcome back!

It was a pleasant surprise today to see the sign back at one of St. Croix’s most iconic landmarks. As someone who visits Point Udall regularly, it’s nice to see this special place looking complete again.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring it back.

March 31 – Transfer Day 🇻🇮

Standing here at Fort Frederik today, it’s hard not to think about what happened on this exact spot in 1917.

This is where the Danish flag was lowered, the American flag was raised, and the Danish West Indies became the United States Virgin Islands in a $25 million transfer.

From the outside, it can sound like a simple exchange.

But for the people who were living here, it was anything but.

This wasn’t a decision made by them, it was a decision made about them. And by 1917, the majority of the population—descendants of enslaved Africans—were still navigating the realities left behind after emancipation in 1848. Freedom had come, but true economic opportunity had not.

When the United States took over, there was hope. Hope for change, for investment, for something better.

After the transfer, the islands were placed under U.S. Naval rule, where they would remain until 1931. And even though the American flag was raised in 1917, U.S. citizenship didn’t come until 1927—ten years later.

Land stayed concentrated. Opportunities were limited. And even today, people born here are U.S. citizens who cannot vote for president and have limited representation in Congress.

So Transfer Day isn’t just about a flag change.

It’s about layers of history, resilience, and the people who have lived through it all.

Because when you stand here… you realize this story was never just about who owned the islands.

It’s about the people who built them, carried them forward, and continue to shape them every single day.
