Long Tan – Nui Dat | 60 Years On
Some places are more than destinations.
For many Australians, Long Tan is a place of remembrance.
On 18 August 1966, D Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), encountered a much larger force in a rubber plantation near Long Tan, only a few kilometres from the Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat. The battle lasted for hours, with Australian and New Zealand artillery support playing a critical role. (Australian War Memorial)
Seventeen Australians were killed during the battle, and another later died from his wounds. Many more were wounded.
Three years later, in 1969, members of 6RAR returned to the battlefield and erected the Long Tan Cross in memory of those who lost their lives. The cross has since become one of the most enduring symbols of remembrance for Australians connected to the Vietnam War. (Australian War Memorial)
Today, visitors from Australia continue to make the journey to Long Tan and Nui Dat — not simply to see a place in history, but to pause, remember, and pay their respects.
