If you’re looking for a destination rich in history, cuisine and culture, yet without the overwhelming crowds, Hue is an excellent choice.

Just a short one-hour flight from Hanoi, Hue is famous for its eclectic royal tombs, atmospheric pagodas and remarkable culinary traditions - food so good it was once served to kings and queens.

If your schedule allows, we recommend spending at least three nights, or more ideally, to fully experience the city’s charm.

𝑫𝒂𝒚 1: 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒄 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔

For eager explorers, a gentle circuit of Hue’s Imperial Citadel and the royal tombs offers the perfect introduction.

A highlight is the magnificent Khai Dinh Tomb, a place where splendour knows no bounds. A grand stairway climbs past the Mandarins’ Court of stone officials, horses and elephants to Thien Dinh Palace, whose exuberant interior glitters with glass and porcelain mosaics beneath a ceiling of nine dragons. Inside, life-size bronze effigies of the emperor - cast in France - stand in solemn watch.

As described in Heritage Magazine (Vietnam Airlines):

“Mosaics are neatly featured on every surface. The colourful porcelain shards remain brilliant, projecting splendour - a little flashy, but stunning in every detail, worthy of a ruler of the Nguyen dynasty. This is the most exquisite altar of all those made to worship the Nguyen emperors.”

𝑫𝒂𝒚 2: 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑯𝒖𝒆

Early risers and keen photographers should head to Thanh Phuoc Market, where conical-hat-topped vendors go about their day with warm smiles. Just nearby, the Thanh Phuoc Communal House offers a quiet look into Hue’s understated royal aesthetic.

Breakfast is best enjoyed street-side with local specialties such as banh bot loc, banh ram it and nem lui, paired with sua chua nep cam (yogurt with fermented rice) and Hue’s signature ca phe muoi (salt coffee).

In the afternoon, step into the serenity of Tu Hieu Pagoda, the root temple of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. This pine-shaded sanctuary, with its lotus ponds and chanting monks, invites a peaceful and reflective wander.

Hue is a destination that continues to give. For art lovers, the Le Ba Dang Art Foundation is unmissable. Northern Vietnam hidden gems!

If there is anything that northern part of Vietnam is famous for it has to be its spectacular scenery, amazing cuisine and unique cultures!

For this itinerary, we focus on rather off the beaten track destinations (Mai Chau & Pu Luong) which are renowned for pristine landscape, spectacular views & hilltribe encounters! Ninh Binh & Ha Long can also be combined with these two destinations to make a perfect one week northern adventure!

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏: 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐢 - 𝐌𝐚𝐢 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐮 (𝟑 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞)
Only 3 hour drive from Hanoi, Mai Chau feels like a different world with small ethnic minority villages, paddy fields, green mountains, rural culture & delicious home-cooked cuisine!
You will be picked up at your hotel around 8:00 am and will arrive at Mai Chau around 11:00 am. Check in and relax.
In the afternoon hop on your bike and start exploring Mai Chau valley. It doesn’t take long to feel like you’ve found your own quiet corner, riding past humble villages and rice paddies.

Today you will visit Pu Luong - a true gem of the north!
Around 2 hour drive from Mai Chau, Pu Luong is well known for its stunning rice terrace fields, beautiful nature, breathtaking mountain passes and traditional villages of ethnic minorities.
You will arrive at Pu Luong Retreat in time for a delicious lunch, followed by free time to explore the beautiful retreat, with its captivating panoramic views and tranquil setting.
In the afternoon get close to village life and interact with locals living in the hills above the Retreat. Glimpse at daily life, walk around working farmland and rice fields, and get to know more about the local culture. Walking back the retreat for nice dinner.

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟑: 𝐏𝐮 𝐋𝐮𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐤𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠
Start your trekking tour by descending into a beautiful valley near the retreat. Then walk through small paths shrouded in vegetation which will slowly reveals a picturesque Uoi village sitting at the base of a towering mountain. Your camera will not be able to sit still!
Continue your walk down hill to a local home, where you can take a rest then start your cycling trip. Cycle around rice paddies and local villages before stopping at the beautiful Hieu waterfall, the sole one in the reserve. Ride back to the local home where you will be picked up and transferred back to Pu Luong!

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟒: 𝐏𝐮 𝐋𝐮𝐨𝐧𝐠 - 𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐡 𝐁𝐢𝐧𝐡 (𝟑 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞)
Today you will visit Ninh Binh, a mesmerizing area known locally as ‘Ha Long Bay on Land’ thanks to its magical riverine landscape, with sheer limestone mountains rising up from the paddies.
Check in Tam Coc Garden, one of our absolute favourite hotels in Ninh Binh and relax. Tam Coc Garden is a charming boutique resort tucked away from it all and surrounded by rice paddies and towering limestone peaks.
Enjoy a free afternoon by the pool or you can take an paddleboat tour along its shimmering rivers, one of the best way to get a sense of this UNESCO-protected site.

Cruise day! Time to kick back and relax on a well-deserved cruise!
Today you will be transferred from Ninh Binh to Ha Long Bay!
Set off on Heritage Cruise, where you’ll be pampered in style and comfort whilst meandering through the towering limestone cliffs and emerald green waters of Ha long Bay.
Stop in Tra Bau, a secret hideaway in Lan Ha Bay that has beaches, caves and coves. You can try kayaking or simply swim in the clear waters of the bay. Back to your boat, enjoy life aboard the vessel or in your suite, enjoy the sunset over the Gulf of Tonkin.
In late afternoon part in a professional cooking demonstration before indulging in a luxurious dinner in the dining hall. Spend the rest of the evening as you’d like: watch a movie in the dining area, relax on the deck with a cocktail, or go squid fishing under the cover of night.

𝐒𝐀𝐏𝐀 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐋 𝐓𝐈𝐏𝐒

We absolutely love Sapa and if you're thinking of visiting this beautiful region soon, considering some tips below:

𝐒𝐚𝐩𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫
✅If you like cool temperatures: Between November and March
November - December is also best for cloud watching whilst January – February is ideal if you’d like to take pictures of the peach blossoms.
December is usually the coldest month in Sapa with temperatures being sub 0 and you can also expect snow.

✅If you like clear blue skies and pleasant weather: April - May:
This is also the rice planting season in Sapa.
✅If you don’t mind the heat: June and July
Travelling during those months you can expect fewer visitors, spontaneous (yet short) rain and lush green paddy fields!
✅If you are into golden paddy fields (who isn’t?): August – September
These are the times when the rice terraces are the most splendid so don’t forget to pack your camera!
✅If you can’t make any of those months how about October? This is meadow flowers season, and the heat is almost gone. A perfect time to explore this beautiful mountainous area!

𝐒𝐚𝐩𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭
The most popular way to get to Sapa is by shuttle bus or private car. The journey takes around 5.5 hours so if you depart early in the morning from Hanoi you will get to Sapa by lunch time.
You can take overnight train from Hanoi. The train departs at Hanoi station around 9:30 pm and you will arrive at Lao Cai station the next morning at around 5:30 am. From Lao Cai station, it is around 1 hour to get to your hotel in Sapa.
4 berth shared cabin is the most economical way if you travel by train but if you prefer some privacy (and luxury) consider upgrading yourself to a private cabin.
And if you’d like, you can also combine car and train (so going to Sapa by car and going back by train!)

𝐀 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲:
We recommend planning around 3 - 4 days for the Sapa trip. If you are into trekking, nature and encountering ethnic hilltribe villages consider this itinerary:

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏: Hanoi – Sapa by car or shuttle bus. Afternoon tour of Love Waterfall.
A truly stunning waterfall! Before you reach Love Waterfall, you'll take a stroll through this amazing bamboo forest. It's like stepping into a fairytale, with moss-covered trees and patches of vibrant azalea flowers popping up everywhere. The atmosphere is so peaceful, and the scenery is untouched and beautiful.
As you follow the winding path, you can't miss Love Waterfall. It's a sight to behold! From a distance, it looks like a sparkling conical hat just shining in the sun. It's a whopping 100 meters tall, and the water gushes down into a golden stream, surrounded by lush greenery and thick bamboo!

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐: Sapa – off the beaten track trekking to remote villages:
With this itinerary we will take you away from the crowds and the most touristy villages in Sapa!
Ta Van and Ta Phin are beautiful but they can give the false impression of over tourism in Sapa. We would suggest visiting remoter villages so that you can truly appreciate the beauty of Sapa.
Our local guide will take you to My Son, Nam Cang and Nam Nhiu villages, home to various ethnic minority groups like Xa Pho, Red Zao, and White H'mong. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking vistas of the expansive paddy terrace fields, vibrant cornfields and towering mountains!
You will have a hearty lunch in a traditional minority people's house on stilts in Thanh Phu Village.

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟑: Visit a local market
Time your visit well because Sunday markets are an absolute treat! The lively market springs to life as traders from various tribes, including the Dzao, Han, Xa Fang, Tay, and Thai, gather in their traditional attire. It's a vibrant spectacle of colors and bustling activity, where you can witness the excitement of lively haggling and the rich cultural tapestry of the local communities.
Bac Ha is the biggest and most popular Sunday market. There are other markets to visit on other days of the week.
Please note Bac Ha is around 2.5 hour from Sapa town. We recommend going back to Hanoi by car or shuttle bus after the tour to avoid the long transfer back to Sapa town.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐩𝐚

You'll be spoilt for choices when it comes to luxury and boutique hotels in Sapa.

If you are looking for a hotel with great view then Topas Ecolodge, our all time favourite, is a super choice. Imagine waking up to crisp mountain air, chirping birds and a view to die for. Topas is also the only luxury resort in Vietnam that is certified unique lodge by National Geographic.

✅Bring appropriate clothing: Sapa's weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and be prepared for both cool and warm temperatures. Don't forget a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes for hiking.
✅Pack essentials: Don't forget essentials such as sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and a reusable water bottle. Sapa's high altitude and outdoor activities make staying hydrated and protected from the sun crucial.

October is mixed in terms of weather and is best for:

North Vietnam (Sapa, Ha Long, Hanoi, Mai Chau, Ninh Binh) and south Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta)

October is one of the best months to visit north Vietnam, now that the rain season has become a thing of the past. The temperature is mild and the sun is gentle, making an ideal weather for most sightseeing activities.

Mai Chau (4 hour drive from Hanoi) is glorious in October with golden rice paddy fields and definitely worth a visit.
In the south it is the end of rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta. There is still some rain if you visit Phu Quoc this time of year though overall all there are more sunny hours during the day.

𝐌𝐚𝐢 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐮: Only 4 hour drive from Hanoi, Mai Chau feels like a different world with lush valley, mountainous views and delicious northern style cuisine.
Our favourite option in Mai Chau is Avana Retreat, a high end resort surrounded by beautiful hills, mountains, paddy field and a natural waterfall. The villas are stylish, spacious and luxurious with ceiling to floor window offering amazing mountainous view!
We also love Mai Chau Eco Lodge, an eco resorts surrounded by mountain and paddy fields.

𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐡 𝐁𝐢𝐧𝐡: Only 2 hour drive from Hanoi, Ninh Binh is a mesmerizing area known locally as ‘Ha Long Bay on Land’ thanks to its riverine landscape, with sheer limestone mountains rising up from the paddy field.
Our favourite resort in Ninh Binh is Tam Coc Garden. The resort is especially famous for its beautiful gardens and stunning views of rice paddies and limestone formations! Sunrise and sunset views are rather magical, if you ask!
Another of our favourites is Nham Village which has the most idyllic surroundings and a unique ambiance that, when you arrive, you will instantly feel relaxed! Think water lily pond, lush green mountain, spacious rooms with a rustic feel. The swimming pool is beyond beautiful, and their Moc spa, located in a 100-year-old house, is excellent. Their bicycles are free for you to explore the area, or you can also sign up for a boat rowing class!

𝐒𝐚𝐩𝐚: You'll be spoilt for choices when it comes to luxury and boutique hotels in Sapa.
If you are looking for a hotel with great view then Topas Ecolodge, our all time favourite, is a super choice. Imagine waking up to crisp mountain air, chirping birds and a view to die for. Topas is also the only luxury resort in Vietnam that is certified unique lodge by National Geographic.
Another great option is Sapa Jade Hills, located under 2km from the center of Sapa town. We love the resort's distinctive style which truly celebrates Sapa indigenous culture and their bungalows with beautiful view of the Muong Hoa valley will not leave you disappointed.

Ben Tre: We love 'Mekong home', a fabulous homestay by the river in Ben Tre, only 2 hour drive from Saigon. Come experience the most peaceful landscape, lush garden, delicious food and such warm hospitality people in this region are particularly known for!
You can make the best of this region by staying 01 night in Ben Tre before heading to Can Tho and Chau Doc for a floating market fix!

Can Tho: Our absolute favourite hotel is Victoria Can Tho resort. Located on the banks of Hau River, ideal for exploring the floating markets that the Mekong Delta is so famous for, this Indochine style hotel offers top notch service, amazing food, great green space with its magnificent garden

Chau Doc: Our favourite hotel is Nui Sam Lodge, located on the side of Sam Mountain. We love the stone bungalows here, all with terraces or private balconies. The resort’s infinity pool also offers unobstructed views over the surrounding valley making it the ideal place for yoga and tai chi orto simply relax!

𝐒𝐀𝐏𝐀 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐋 𝐓𝐈𝐏𝐒
We absolutely love Sapa and if you're thinking of visiting this beautiful region soon, considering some tips below:

𝐒𝐚𝐩𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫
✅If you like cool temperatures: Between November and March
November - December is also best for cloud watching whilst January – February is ideal if you’d like to take pictures of the peach blossoms.

End of December is usually the coldest month in Sapa with temperatures being sub 0 and you can also expect snow.

✅If you like clear blue skies and pleasant weather: April - May:
This is also the rice planting season in Sapa.

✅June and July : Travelling during those months you can expect fewer visitors, spontaneous (yet short) rain and lush green paddy fields!

✅If you are into golden paddy fields (who isn’t?): August – September

These are the times when the rice terraces are the most splendid so don’t forget to pack your camera!

✅If you can’t make any of those months how about October? This is meadow flowers season, and the heat is almost gone. A perfect time to explore this beautiful mountainous area!

𝐒𝐚𝐩𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭
The most popular way to get to Sapa is by shuttle bus or private car. The journey takes around 5.5 hours so if you depart early in the morning from Hanoi you will get to Sapa by lunch time.
You can take overnight train from Hanoi. The train departs at Hanoi station around 9:30 pm and you will arrive at Lao Cai station the next morning at around 5:30 am. From Lao Cai station, it is around 1 hour to get to your hotel in Sapa.
4 berth shared cabin is the most economical way if you travel by train but if you prefer some privacy (and luxury) consider upgrading yourself to a private cabin.
And if you’d like, you can also combine car and train (so going to Sapa by car and going back by train!)

𝐀 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲:
We recommend planning around 3 - 4 days for the Sapa trip. If you are into trekking, nature and encountering ethnic hilltribe villages consider this itinerary:
𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏: Hanoi – Sapa by car or shuttle bus. Afternoon tour of Love Waterfall.
A truly stunning waterfall! Before you reach Love Waterfall, you'll take a stroll through this amazing bamboo forest. It's like stepping into a fairytale, with moss-covered trees and patches of vibrant azalea flowers popping up everywhere. The atmosphere is so peaceful, and the scenery is untouched and beautiful.
As you follow the winding path, you can't miss Love Waterfall. It's a sight to behold! From a distance, it looks like a sparkling conical hat just shining in the sun. It's a whopping 100 meters tall, and the water gushes down into a golden stream, surrounded by lush greenery and thick bamboo!
𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐: Sapa – off the beaten track trekking to remote villages:
With this itinerary we will take you away from the crowds and the most touristy villages in Sapa!
Ta Van and Ta Phin are beautiful but they can give the false impression of over tourism in Sapa. We would suggest visiting remoter villages so that you can truly appreciate the beauty of Sapa.
Our local guide will take you to My Son, Nam Cang and Nam Nhiu villages, home to various ethnic minority groups like Xa Pho, Red Zao, and White H'mong. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking vistas of the expansive paddy terrace fields, vibrant cornfields and towering mountains!
You will have a hearty lunch in a traditional minority people's house on stilts in Thanh Phu Village.
𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟑: Visit a local market
Time your visit well because Sunday markets are an absolute treat! The lively market springs to life as traders from various tribes, including the Dzao, Han, Xa Fang, Tay, and Thai, gather in their traditional attire. It's a vibrant spectacle of colors and bustling activity, where you can witness the excitement of lively haggling and the rich cultural tapestry of the local communities.
Bac Ha is the biggest and most popular Sunday market. There are other markets to visit on other days of the week.
Please note Bac Ha is around 2.5 hour from Sapa town. We recommend going back to Hanoi by car or shuttle bus after the tour to avoid the long transfer back to Sapa town.
