Many people thought that Hanoi only has famous landmarks and busy streets. However, beyond the crowds lies another off-the-beaten-path side of the city.

Just imagine one morning, you decide to see Hanoi differently. You wander into quiet corners, carrying stories from the past, such as an infamous U.S. bomber crash lake or a hidden residence of Vietnam’s final king.

Besides its rich history, Hanoi also reveals itself through its everyday rhythm. Inside a local market, daily routines continue as usual. Among the crowded stalls, you can uncover untold wartime stories hidden in an old apartment. It feels strange how history and life could exist side by side so naturally here.

By lunchtime, you sit at a small local spot and eat local dishes. Then the afternoon became a journey through Hanoi’s street food culture with tiny stools, smoky grills, endless flavours, and the sound of locals chatting around us 🍜✨

Most people love colourful desserts, but this village takes pride in a black one ✨

We had a chance to visit a small village by a river, where this black cake was made. Here, you can see hands shaped by years of experience wrapping cakes. You can see warm batches of bánh g*i in a big pot, carrying the sweet taste of mung beans, coconut, and ramie leaves.

We sat beside a local artisan, listened to his story about the tradition of making bánh g*i every year and how the children felt when they received this black gift from their mother. We realised that behind this small black cake are memories of many Vietnamese children.

🎥 Here’s a little behind-the-scenes glimpse from our newest What a Vietnam episode: Bánh G*i.

How bánh g*i comes to life? 🖤🇻🇳

First, locals prepared the sweet filling, including mung beans, coconut, sugar and lotus seeds. Then, the filling is carefully wrapped inside soft black dough made from ramie leaves. This is the ingredient that gives bánh g*i its unique colour. After being sprinkled with sesame seeds, each cake is wrapped in dried banana leaves and steamed until it's soft

For many Vietnamese people, bánh g*i has a taste of childhood, family gatherings, Tết holidays, and traditional celebrations.

In Vietnam, there’s a cake… the darker, the tastier 🖤🇻🇳

Sounds strange, right? While most people are drawn to colourful desserts, in a small village near Hanoi, locals proudly cherish a traditional cake that is as black as night: bánh g*i (G*i cake).

It was made from ramie leaves, sticky rice, mung beans, coconut, and lotus seeds (if available). It has been part of Vietnamese culture for generations. The leaves are boiled for hours to create their deep black colour.

Back then, families gathered together to prepare batches for the holiday, weddings, and special occasions. Today, many people see bánh g*i as a black gift from childhood memories when mothers brought this treat home from the market for their children.

In Vietnam, sometimes the simplest and strangest things are the ones people remember the longest ✨

You've heard about bánh mì but did you know that...

Behind this bánh mì is a story that began more than 100 years ago. In the mid-19th century, the French introduced baguettes to Vietnam. At first, bread and toppings were served separately with butter and sugar.

Over time, Vietnamese people adapted the bread, fillings, and flavours to fit local taste, eating habits & weather conditions. Locals made the bread lighter, crispier, airier, and shorter, so it is easier to digest and more affordable

In Saigon, in 1958, with the city’s fast-paced lifestyle, bánh mì evolved into a convenient grab-and-go meal. They combined bánh mì with pâté, cold cuts, pickled vegetables, herbs, and chilli. And that's how the first "bánh mì thịt" was born.

Today, the world loves it so much that “bánh mì” was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Many travellers in Vietnam have joined the viral “Stand Bánh Mì” trend: holding a bánh mì, and enjoying one of Vietnam’s most iconic street foods.

A typical morning in Vietnam be like… ☀️🇻🇳

In Vietnam, many locals start their mornings very early. By 6 AM, the neighbourhood park slowly fills with people exercising, stretching, and walking.

After warming up, we follow their steps to a small food stall for breakfast. A warm bowl of phở and a dish of broken rice (cơm tấm) are a great choice to fuel your day before another busy life begins. After breakfast, it's time to enjoy a cup of coffee on tiny stools and watch the city move.

Morning is also the time to update the news. Some people read newspapers, others exchange stories with neighbours over coffee or at local markets. Little by little, the peaceful rhythm fades into another busy working day.

Step into a small alleyway in Vietnam, and you’ll quickly realise it’s not only a shortcut 🇻🇳

In the North, people call it “Ngõ”. In the South, it becomes “Hẻm”. But whether what it is called, these narrow streets carry the rhythm of everyday life. Some alleys also have markets inside.

Early in the morning, alleyways can become crowded local markets filled with the sounds of vendors, fresh ingredients, and cheerful chatter. A few hours later, the atmosphere slowly changes. The streets become calmer, children come outside to play, locals gather on tiny stools to play chess.
