Approaching 12 midnight on the 8th day, we will prepare for the "Jade Emperor ritual" (Chinese: 拜天公; pinyin: Bài tiāngōng) during which incense is burnt and food offerings made to the Jade Emperor and also to Zao Jun (the Kitchen God) who reports on each family to the Jade Emperor.
It is commonly practised in Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and China.

Tomorrow - Day 7 of the Lunar New Year is known as a Birthday for everyone.

Very often, in Singapore, we will eat with our family/friends a famous dish called "Yusheng", also known as "yee sang" or "lo hey", a salad dish made of thin slices of raw fish, shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments. The dish symbolises a lucky delicacy which brings prosperity and longevity to diners whole year.

When Yee Sang is eaten, the ritual is to toss the mixed ingredients high in the air with a shout of "Loh Hey" which literally means to ‘move upwards’. It is symbolic of the wish for our fortunes to rise and expand during the forthcoming year.

It is believed that the exercise will bring the five blessings of the New Year, which are longevity, peace, riches, virtue and wisdom. It is a custom that we practice in my traditional Home in Singapore. Do you practice that?
Pix below is a vegetarian meal I had at a temple in Seoul near Insadong.
