A day at a bai begins with the first light filtering through the forest and ends as dusk settles over the clearing.

Throughout the day, wildlife comes and goes – forest elephants, birds, buffalo and other rainforest residents gather at these mineral-rich wetlands to feed, drink and interact.

No two hours are ever the same. At a bai, patience is always rewarded.

Gorilla trekking isn't about finding gorillas as quickly as possible.

It's about learning to move at the pace of the rainforest – noticing fresh feeding signs, listening to the forest, watching your guide read subtle clues, and understanding that every step is part of the experience.

By the time you meet a gorilla family, you've already begun to see the rainforest differently. The encounter is unforgettable, but so is the journey that leads to it.

Caught on camera in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, these western lowland gorillas prove that the rainforest is full of personality as well as incredible wildlife.

When darkness falls, the rainforest doesn't go to sleep.

Night drives offer a chance to experience a different side of Odzala-Kokoua National Park, when sounds become sharper and many animals become more active. Guided by spotlights and expert eyes, guests may encounter nocturnal wildlife and discover a world that remains largely hidden during the day.

Every night drive is different, but that's part of the excitement. In the rainforest, you never know what might be waiting beyond the next bend.

Why do guests wear masks during gorilla tracking?

The answer is simple: to protect the gorillas.

Western lowland gorillas share much of our genetic makeup and are vulnerable to many of the same illnesses, including common colds and flu. Wearing a mask helps reduce the risk of transmitting disease and is an essential part of responsible gorilla tourism.

At Kamba, guests are also encouraged to take the Gorilla Friendly Pledge (www.gorillafriendly.org/pledge), a commitment to simple actions that help protect gorillas and support their long-term survival. Every responsible choice helps keep these remarkable animals wild and healthy.

It's a small step that helps ensure future generations can continue to encounter gorillas in the wild.

Bird of the month: the Eastern Yellow-billed Barbet.

Hidden high in the rainforest canopy, the Eastern Yellow-billed Barbet is easy to miss despite its bright yellow bill and striking black-and-white markings. These colourful birds spend much of their time feeding on fruit among the treetops, playing an important role in dispersing seeds throughout the forest.

Keep your eyes on the canopy and you may be rewarded with a fleeting glimpse of one of Odzala's lesser-known residents.
