We're keeping a promise to a few recent asks... Sticking with our theme from our tour a few nights ago, we're sharing a few pictures from our trip to Salem, Massachusetts. If you're thinking of going yourself, it is definitely worth the trip.

P.S. Don't go in October, if you don't like crowds or lines! 🧙

The Johnston House played host to a bachelorette last night, with a group of very lovely ladies. It was extra exciting for us, as this group was also a coven and brought with them their own unique abilities that paired with the home immediately. Everyone had an amazing time and I think the entire group left with memories and experiences that will last for lifetimes. 👻

Today, in honour of Father's Day, we thought we'd go back to the beginning of the history of this home. The land on which it stands, was at one time the pasture land of englishman Thomas Greentree, one of the first European settlers in the area.

Of course the land had been inhabited prior to that by members of the Cree and Blackfoot tribes. Before being known as "The Crossing" the bend in the river just north of the home was called "Beaverhead" by the indigenous communities. The surrounding land (including the plot where our home would later be constructed) was territory that was fought over for its prime hunting and fishing; the river being close, the buffalo were plentiful. Much blood was spilt on this land before the home was ever erected.

The natives were nomads and seasonally moved out of their summer hunting and foraging areas for the warmer weather to the south. Thomas Greentree of the Rosebud area, bought title to the land on June 21st 1909, and settled here with his family because of the fertile soil conditions and potential for growing crops and cattle ranching. Jerome Drumheller from Washington, was a savvy businessman that smelled opportunity, and knew western settlement and the railroads would bring people. The rich coal deposits were known by then as well, and township in the area would follow. He came up and bought the land around Fox Coulee from Thomas on July 13, 1910. Later his son, Sam, would take control of the holdings and had lots subdivided, and sold four to a Dr. Gibson. The physician built his home just west of what would turn into 3rd Ave East, flipped his remaining 2 large lots to Mr. Fulton (store owner, later mayor) and Dr. Robert James Johnston (new dentist to the area).

The future of our home was established. The lumber for the bones was wagon-trained from Iowa and floated down river to the site sometime between 1918 and 1919 (Dr. Bob fought in WW1 as a member of their Expeditiary Forces). First taxation to the built home is April 14th, 1920. Bob lived here with his young bride Blanche, had his two children here (Bobby and Marjorie) and would pass here on October 10th 1936. The rest, as you know, is part of what forms our home's history and is responsible for much of its activity... a story for another time.

Had a great investigation last night with Veil- Walkers Paranormal. Used the talking-board in the parlour for the first time, and had some amazing results. It would appear that a past resident of the home had been discreetly waiting all these years to be heard from, and took the opportunity to come forward and present herself. "M-a-y-b-e-l, thanks for being an integral part of the legacy of our home, and it's great to finally chat."

We were playing around with AI tonight and thought we'd try our hand at bringing our only still photo of Dr. Bob, to life. Of course there is no way of knowing if it captured his actual mannerisms and expressions, but it was rather touching to see our old friend smile back at us. Give it a look...

Most likely don't know this, but our very own Dr. Bob fought in WWI, as a member of the American Expeditionary Forces. The following excerpt describes his role as a member of this elite team and their contributions in defending our freedom. Today, we remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

"World War I was the first time in American history that the United States sent soldiers abroad to defend foreign soil. On April 6, 1917, when the United States declared war against Germany, the nation had a standing army of 127,500 officers and soldiers. By the end of the war, four million men had served in the United States Army, with an additional 800,000 in other military service branches.

Once war was declared, the army attempted to mobilize the troops very quickly. The fatigued British and French troops, who had been fighting since August 1914, sorely needed the relief offered by the American forces. In May 1917, General John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing was designated the supreme commander of the American army in France, and the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) were created. Pershing and his staff soon realized how ill-prepared the United States was to transport large numbers of soldiers and necessary equipment to the front, where supplies, rations, equipment, and trained soldiers were all in short supply. Since even the transport ships needed to bring American troops to Europe were scarce, the army pressed into service cruise ships, seized German ships, and borrowed Allied ships to transport American soldiers from New York, New Jersey, and Virginia. The mobilization effort taxed the limits of the American military and required new organizational strategies and command structures to transport great numbers of troops and supplies quickly and efficiently.

Although the first American troops arrived in Europe in June 1917, the AEF did not fully participate at the front until October, when the First Division, one of the best-trained divisions of the AEF, entered the trenches at Nancy, France. Pershing wanted an American force that could operate independently of the other Allies, but his vision could not be realized until adequately trained troops with sufficient supplies reached Europe. Training schools in America sent their best men to the front, and Pershing also established facilities in France to train new arrivals for combat.

Throughout 1917 and into 1918, American divisions were usually employed to augment French and British units in defending their lines and in staging attacks on German positions. Beginning in May 1918, with the first United States victory at Cantigny, AEF commanders increasingly assumed sole control of American forces in combat. By July 1918, French forces often were assigned to support AEF operations. During the Battle of St. Mihiel, beginning September 12, 1918, Pershing commanded the American First Army, comprising seven divisions and more than 500,000 men, in the largest offensive operation ever undertaken by United States armed forces. This successful offensive was followed by the Battle of Argonne, lasting from September 27 to October 6, 1918, during which Pershing commanded more than one million American and French soldiers. In these two military operations, Allied forces recovered more than two hundred square miles of French territory from the German army.

By the time Germany signed the Armistice on November 11, 1918, the American Expeditionary Forces had evolved into a modern, combat-tested army recognized as one of the best in the world."

An end to another season here at the Johnston House. We had a terrific group through tonight, and a birthday girl got a special shout out from the good Dr. himself. Some cool new developments are in the works for next year, and potentially a new spirit as well to introduce... stayed tuned! Have a spooky Halloween, all.

Hi everyone. Had a few people request to see some of the evidence we captured in our family room. Here is an example from a few years ago where I interact with Dr. Bob. The curious part about this video is the two female voices that pop into the conversation. Reminiscent of two siblings, the younger one (potentially Marjorie) correcting the poor speech of the unknown older female. 😊
