Chicago, time is running out. So many of my clients are asking AAVT how to obtain a REAL ID. An individual can only receive one REAL ID card – either a REAL ID driver's license or a REAL ID identification card. Please make sure all your documents are up to date and correct.. Here are the 5 basic steps to obtain your REAL ID:
Step 1: Proof of Identity (1 Document needed)
Date of Birth and U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Status
Step 2: Check Your Name (1 Document needed)
Name change documents, such as a certified marriage certificate etc., are required by the federal government if your current name is different than the name that appears on your identity document (example: birth certificate).
Step 3: Proof of Your Full Social Security Number (SSN) (1 Document needed)
You must present one of the following genuine documents bearing your name and full Social Security number. The Secretary of State's office will electronically verify your name, date of birth and SSN with the Social Security Administration (SSA). If you need to correct or update information with SSA, do so several days before you apply for a DL/ID. If eligible, you can request a replacement SSN card. Visit the SSA website or select a document you will use that contains your full SSN.
Step 4: Provide Proof of Residency (2 Documents needed)
To establish proof of Illinois residency, you must present TWO documents that contain your residence address. The documents must list your first and last name and match the residence address as listed on your DL/ID application such as a Voter's Registration Card, bank statement or Utility Bill with your name on it.
If the residency documents reflect a name that differs from the identity document due to a name change (for example: marriage, divorce, or court order), additional documentation will be required as evidence of the name change.
Step 5: Written Signature (1 Document needed)
Illinois DL/ID, Credit or Debit Card can be used.
Hard copy documents are required. They will not accept images from a cellphone because they are required to scan all documents, but you may print the image from a cellphone (example: bank statement) and provide the printed copy. Account numbers must be visible. Photocopies will not be accepted.
FINALLY, You must make an appointment for in-person visit at most Illinois Secretary of State facilities, including all Chicago and suburban locations, and some central and downstate DMVs. The Illinois Secretary of State website has a section for scheduling appointments to "Skip the Line".
If you cannot get an appointment, you can visit the new walk-in Real ID Only Supercenter at 191 N Clark St, Chicago, or a walk-in Real ID Saturday DMV.
