The Second Largest Church After Hagia Sophia:
The Hagia Irene located in the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace is the oldest church of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine). It was also the second largest church in İstanbul after Hagia Sophia. Hagia Irene, originally means “sacred peace” (Hagia Eirene), has a special meaning as the first place where Turkish museology was born.

Hagia Irene, a typical Byzantine structure with its materials and architecture, was built on top of an older temple, out of wood in 330. During the reign of Emperor Justinianus, the Nika Revolt in 532 led to the devastation of both Hagia Sophia and the Hagia Irene, and two of them were rebuilt together.

Obelisk of Theodosius

The Obelisk of Theodosius was one of the monuments on the spina of the Hippodrome of Constantinople during the reign of Theodosius I in 390. It was originally commissioned by the Egyptian Pharaoh Tuthmosis III in the 15th century BC to commemorate his victories in Syria. It was erected in the Hippodrome in part to commemorate the defeat of the usurper Maximus and his son Victor by Theodosius in 388.

The obelisk is made of Aswan granite and is almost 20 meters tall. It is 72.5 meters from the Masonry Obelisk and the Serpent Column stands between the obelisks, which traces the line of the spina of the Hippodrome. It rests on an elaborately decorated base depicting Theodosius and his court at the Hippodrome. There are four bronze cubes supporting the corners of the obelisk. They rest on a sculpted Proconnesian marble base, which is around 7 square meters. Under this base is another wider marble base, which is also supported by four granite blocks set at the corners of the upper base. It was originally crowned with a bronze pinecone which was knocked off by a violence wind in 869.

Beylerbeyi Palace
Beylerbeyi and its environs have been a residential area since Byzantine period. Sultan Mahmud II (1808 -1839) ordered to built a wooden palace on the site of some earlier buildings constructed in the area at various periods. When this burned down, a new palace and additional buildings were built between the years 1863-1865 by the order of Sultan Abdülaziz. The main palace building consisting of the Mabeyn and Harem sections can be visited. The Yellow Kiosk located beside the big pool on the upper terrace garden, the Marble Kiosk, the Stable Kiosk, where the royal horses were kept, and the Marine Kiosks are closed to visitors.

Beylerbeyi Palace was used as a summer residence and as the State Guest House. Many guests stayed here like Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria-Hungary (1869); Eugénie, Empress of France (1869); Nikola, King of Montenegro (1874) and German Emperor Wilhelm II. Sultan Abdülhamid II, after he was dethroned, spent his last six years in Beylerbeyi Palace and died here in 1918.

In the Depths of History
The Basilica Cistern Museum is one of the most important cultural assets where we can trace the traces of glorious Istanbul history. This grand underground cistern, built by Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I (527-565), is nicknamed “Yerebatan Sarayı” (Sunken Palace) among the public due to its numerous marble columns rising from the water. It is also known as “Bazilika Sarnıcı” (Basilica Cistern) by some, as it was built on the site of the former Stoa Basilica, which was a basilica.

With its 80,000-ton water storage capacity, Yerebatan Cistern is the largest covered cistern in the city and stands out with more reclaimed supporting elements compared to other covered cisterns. Covering an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, this colossal structure has a rectangular shape with a length of 140 meters and a width of 70 meters.

According to written sources, the cistern used to distribute water from waterways and rain to the Great Palace, where the emperors resided, and the surrounding buildings, meeting the city’s water needs for hundreds of years. It also received water from one of the historical aqueducts called the Hadrianus Aqueduct.

Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque)
You need to go inside to see why it is called the “Blue Mosque.”

Blue Mosque History
The Blue Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616, by the architect Mehmet Ağa, instructed by Sultan Ahmed I. It was designed as an imperial show of strength to complement the imposing Hagia Sophia Mosque, which faces it across Sultanahmet Square. Unlike the Hagia Sophia, however, it is supported by four “elephant foot” pillars and the central dome (23.5m in diameter and 43m high) is flanked by four semi-domes, making it nearly a square in shape.

Amazing facts about Blue Mosque

Aside from its staggering size and exquisite beauty, one of the most distinctive elements of this Istanbul mosque is that it has six minarets, as opposed to the usual two or four of most of the city’s mosques. In the history of the Blue Mosque, legend has it that this is because of a misunderstanding – when the Sultan decreed there should be altın minaret (gold minarets), the architect heard altı minaret (six minarets) – an easy mistake to make! This caused some controversy, as the only other mosque with six minarets at that time was the Prophet’s mosque in Mecca – a problem the sultan overcame by ordering a seventh to be added in Mecca.

Rumeli Fortress

UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF OTTOMAN MILITARY ARCHITECTURE
The Fortresses (Hisarlar) Museum embodies Rumeli, Yedikule and Anadolu Fortresses. Among all, Rumeli Fortress Museum clearly stands out the most. The Rumelihisarı or Bogazkesen (Throat-Cutter Castle) Hisarı covering a 30-acre area in Sarıyer, also gives its name to the location. Rumeli (Diyar-ı Rum) Hisarı name means “Fortress on the Land of the Romans”, which given to the countries of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkan peninsula. It was built in a short period of four months (The main sources of historical evidence studies are made by Ayverdi, Gabriel, and Dagtekin (Erismis, 2012, Ayverdi, 1974, Ayverdi, 1953, Ilgaz, 1941, Dagtekin, 1963).) by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror in 1452 before the conquest of İstanbul in order to manage the passing ships in the bosphorus, to create a military-financial control point, and to implement a strong resistance base to prevent attacks from the north of the Bosphorus. Some historical sources state that 300 masters, 700-800 workers, 200 coachmen, boatmen and transporters worked to construct the fortress in this limited time. The architect of the fortress is Muslihiddin Ağa, who is the head architect of Mehmed II.

GALATA TOWER MUSEUM
Also known as the Galata Kulesi Museum, an iconic symbol situated in the Galata quarter of İstanbul, Türkiye.
Considered among the oldest towers in the world and one of the symbols of İstanbul, Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Temporary List in 2013. Galata Tower, one of the most important structures that make up the silhouette of İstanbul, was used as a long-term fire watchtower and was named Galata Fire Tower.

Galata Tower was first built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinianos in 507-508 AD. The ancient Tower of Galata “Megalos Pyrgos”, which means Great Tower stood on the north side of the Golden Horn in İstanbul, located in the citadel of Galata. The tower then marked the northern end of the great chain, which was expanded across the mouth of the Golden Horn to prevent enemy ships from entering the harbor. The tower contained a mechanism for raising and lowering the chain. This tower should not be confused with the present time Galata Tower, which is still standing and located at the northernmost and highest point of the citadel of Galata.
