An absolute unit of a Nile Monitor (Varanus niloticus), one of the most powerful and adaptable predators to call Southern Africa home. Despite numerous observations, this was the first our team was able to get in hand.

It was a memorable night of over-the-shoulder herping, surrounded by angry hippos and crocodiles larger than our boat. We stuck to the “open” grasslands (which are commonly taller than one is able to see over), as the forest isn’t much safer than the lake due to Cape buffalo. It’s common to feel you’re experiencing an adrenaline overdose before even running into anything of note 🙃

The marbled reed frog (Hyperolius marmoratus) is a species in the family Hyperoliidae; found in Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, Lesotho, Kenya, Zambia, and Tanzania.

This was a massive target for us on a scouting trip to the Eastern Highlands of the Zimbabwe/Mozambique border last November, and this smashing individual was the result of a long morning’s hike- a lifer for all of us.

We couldn’t have known just how successful the search would be, as once our efforts bled over into Honde Valley, there would be dozens (if not hundreds) of encounters throughout both natural and man-made water sources.

These frogs are a total box of chocolates, no two ever look the same. Their color and pattern also shifts greatly between day and night, as well as through the seasons.
