1987 – State Archeologist Calvin Jones excavated the site where Hernando de Soto spent the winter of 1539 during his explorations of Florida. This place, located near Tallahassee, just a mile east of the State’s capitol, is the only site where DeSoto is confirmed to have visited. Jones was able to find pottery, big bones, and coins that identified the site. Thanks to Jones’ discoveries, the state purchased the site in 1988, which is now the DeSoto Historic State Camp.

You can read more about DeSoto’s expedition from the Florida Division of Historical Resources: Hernando de Soto 1539–1540 Winter Encampment at Anhaica Apalachee - Division of Historical Resources - Florida Department of State.

My heart is broken for my alma mater FSU, the students, faculty, and staff who deserve a world where education is not connected to fear, and for the whole Tallahassee community that was affected today. May we learn to live in peace.

April 14, 1975 – Demonstrators supporting the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) marched from the governor’s mansion to the Capitol, as part of the “Florida Parades for the ERA” movement. The goal of this demonstration was to encourage Florida’s legislature to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, a proposed amendment to the U.S Constitution that would explicitly prohibit discrimination based on s*x in all fifty states. The ERA obtained the necessary votes in the House of Representatives and the Senate but failed to achieve the needed ratification of thirty-eight states, falling short of only three, since thirty-five states did approve it. Florida was one of the states that did not ratify this proposed amendment.
