1987 – State Archeologist Calvin Jones excavated the site where Hernando de Soto spent the winter of 1539 during his explorations of Florida. This place, located near Tallahassee, just a mile east of the State’s capitol, is the only site where DeSoto is confirmed to have visited. Jones was able to find pottery, big bones, and coins that identified the site. Thanks to Jones’ discoveries, the state purchased the site in 1988, which is now the DeSoto Historic State Camp.
