Many birds blend seamlessly into their environment, especially during the drier months, as their colours provide excellent camouflage, but not the Amethyst Sunbird.

Though it has vibrant colours, its iridescent plumage, purple on the rump and throat, with green on the front, is not always easily visible.

A walk around any residential area, especially where there are gardens and a nearby water source, is likely to attract many visitors. Although the small Striped Kingfisher is a halcyon kingfisher, part of the tree kingfisher subfamily and it is often found away from water.

Gardens, in particular, provide them with the food they need, as they feed on a variety of insects.

The characterful Southern Yellow White-eye is a striking yet small yellow bird found in woodlands and often near gardens. I watched this one collecting spider webs for nest construction.

They are commonly seen year-round in many Southern African countries.

The famous Red-Chested Cuckoo, especially if you live in the southern hemisphere, in Africa. You are usually alerted by their presence by there distinct call, "it will rain, it will rain!".

They are intra African migrants and when the rainy season approaches in the south, they come to breed.

Getting a close-up shot of a bird isn’t always easy—it takes a lot of patience. But sometimes, while you’re skulking around shrubs in the garden, hoping to spot one, they surprise you by making themselves visible for a brief moment, giving you the perfect chance for a clear shot.

This Blue Waxbill crossed the wall and landed right near me in Lilongwe, Malawi. I froze and simply enjoyed his presence. This little seedeater was curious, it felt like he was as intrigued by me as I was by him.

Last June, it was a real privilege to encounter this beauty—the Golden-Tailed Woodpecker. Stefan and I stopped at Pretoriuskop Camp in Kruger National Park, where I heard a light drumming on a nearby tree. I spotted this lovely woodpecker busily excavating.

Kruger National Park is an incredible birding destination, offering close and personal bird sightings. Over its many years of operation, the park has welcomed countless visitors. While some animals remain cautious, many have grown somewhat accustomed to the presence of vehicles and people, making birding sightings incredibly rewarding and providing amazing photo opportunities.

Liwonde Hippo scenes. Looking back at a visit to the stunning Liwonde National Park in Malawi back in 2022. Although the sky was darkened by the heavy clouds, the sun was making its way down and the hippos took advantage of this umbrella and left the Shire river early and we were able to watch them graze the fresh grass. Ah some of the sound recordings just takes you back, it's like music.
