Europe (EU) has launched an Entry-Exit System (EES) as of 10th of November 2024.

The EES uses digital photographs and fingerprints to register travelers when they enter and leave the EU or Schengen area. This will replace the physical stamping of passports (both biometric and non-biometric) at the border.

The EES will be utilized across 29 European countries and all non-EU nationals traveling for a short stay (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) will be required to adhere to this new process which applies to both short-stay visa holders and visa-exempt travelers.

When arriving at passport/border control for the first time after the EES has been launched, officers will scan your fingerprints and/or take a photo of your face. The information will be recorded in a digital file and on subsequent entry and exits, officers will verify your fingerprints and photo, which should take less time.

Entry/Exit System (EES) is the system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay in 29 European countries (starting in the second half of 2024). ETIAS is the Travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers to enter 30 European countries (starting in the first half of 2025).
