The Mamluks in Egypt – A Brief Overview
The Mamluks were a powerful military class that ruled Egypt from 1250 to 1517. Originally, they were enslaved soldiers, mainly of Turkic and Circassian origin, who were trained in military skills and Islamic education. Over time, they rose to power and established one of the most remarkable dynasties in Egyptian history.
The Mamluk Sultanate is divided into two main periods:
The Bahri Mamluks (1250–1382)
The Burji Mamluks (1382–1517)
The Mamluks are famous for their victory over the Mongols at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, which stopped the Mongol expansion into the Middle East. They also played a key role in ending the Crusader presence in the region.
Cairo became one of the greatest cities in the Islamic world during their rule. The Mamluks left behind a rich architectural heritage, including mosques, madrasas, sabils, and mausoleums. Their buildings are known for their intricate decorations, geometric patterns, and impressive stonework.
Beyond architecture, the Mamluks contributed to trade, culture, and Islamic scholarship, making Egypt a center of learning and commerce.
Their rule ended in 1517 when the Ottoman Empire conquered Egypt, but their legacy remains visible today, especially in the historic monuments of Islamic Cairo.
