Intro to Rock Climbing

Over the weekend, Dean was out with a group fromSocial Climbers Societyy for an Intro to Rock Climbing and Abseiling day. The group had traveled up from London, all eager to get out on real rock despite the cooler conditions.

We opted for Blackford Quarry in Edinburgh due to its easy accessibility and the east coast’s tendency to be slightly drier—this plan paid off! The rock stayed dry in the morning, allowing for plenty of climbing before a brief wild spell of rain hit in the afternoon while we were abseiling.

Everyone had a go at a range of climbs, tackling different heights and difficulties. Big thanks to the group for making the journey up—I hope you all enjoyed your first taste of Scottish rock climbing!

Sunrise Adventures

This morning, Dean was out with Natasha, Kerry, Sarah, Kadie, and Lilah 🐶 for an early sunrise hike. With a great weather forecast and a hint of spring in the air, we made a last-minute change of plans and headed for The Cobbler—a hill full of character and stunning views.

For Natasha and Lilah, this was more than just a hike; it was a chance to settle an old grudge after an unsuccessful attempt a few years ago. Early starts can be tough, but they’re always made easier with great company and even better scenery.

A huge well done to everyone—what a way to start the day! Definitely a morning well spent (and well-earned breakfasts all around!).

Summer? Is that you?

With only a few hours free this morning for personal climbing, we made the most of the perfect weather with some climbing at Auchinstarry, a great local crag near Glasgow.

We started with a warm-up in the car park area before heading to the back wall, where the routes rise straight out of the water. Abseiling in always adds a bit of commitment—you’ve got to climb your way out!

After ticking off a few harder routes, we set up a top rope and pushed ourselves on some E-grade climbs before heading off, just in time for lunch.

Back on the Rock!

On Sunday, Dean headed out for a personal climbing day with friends. With the usual better weather on the east coast, they made their way to North Berwick Law for some sunny sport climbing. The rock was dry, the sun was shining—though it wasn’t quite warm yet! It might not be the start of the season just yet, but it’s definitely time to start getting excited.

Learn the Ropes

Last week, Kerry and Maya took part in Braw Mountain Company’s two-part Learn the Ropes course, designed to introduce new climbers to roped climbing. Throughout the sessions, they learned essential skills such as tying in, belaying, and using auto belays, quickly becoming confident and competent belayers.

With the fundamentals in place, they soon turned their focus to pushing themselves on the wall, building both skill and confidence along the way. It was great to see their rapid progress—this is just the beginning of their climbing journey, with plenty of exciting challenges ahead!

January Recap ❄️

January was a deceptively busy month for us at Braw! While it may have seemed quiet on the surface, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes—planning our calendar, refining our events, and putting together the best experiences possible for 2025.

We’ve also been tackling a big project… our new website! It’s been a challenge (turns out we’re much better with ropes than keyboards), but we’re excited to share it with you soon.

A big highlight this month was Dean’s Winter Mountain Leader Training with sotrg. Despite the unseasonably warm weather, it was a fantastic course. There’s a huge amount to learn before, during, and after, but having top-notch instructors like Sandy and Jonty made all the difference.

With winter making brief appearances and plenty still happening in the background, February and March are shaping up to be just as busy. Stay tuned!
