An innovative leader in the eco-tourism industry, Alan McGillivray, the founder of Prince of Whales, started this company in 1994 with one small boat that was used to deliver newspaper and mail bundles to the Gulf Islands in the morning and to take people whale watching in the afternoon. Our small company has now grown to be the first choice for whale watching in both Victoria and Vancouver. We cu

rrently operate 10 high-speed open-air zodiac style vessels and two Ocean Magic Class Express Cruisers. The Ocean Magic boats were purpose-built in 2005 and are state-of-the-art vessels that lessen effects on the animal environment by reducing the amount of noise created and by carrying more passengers within one boat. We also boast 3 world-class efficient catamarans, with heated indoor seating in both Victoria and Vancouver

Each of our eco-tours are hosted by naturalists and skippers who strive to provide an exhilarating experience that is both safe and educational. They are all very proud and protective of the animals and are happy to help you identify individuals within our resident killer whale pods. As the largest Whale Watching and Eco-Adventure Company in BC, and a founding member of the Pacific Whale Watching Association, we are proud to be a leader in responsible whale watching and to have served as teaching platforms for whale research.

A killer whale's flukes are strong, muscular tail fins that provide propulsion through the water, and their shape, size, and any unique markings can be helpful, alongside dorsal fins, eyepatches and other physical attributes to help researchers and our guides identify individual whales.

Steller sea lions are not typically aggressive toward humans, but they can be territorial and defensive, especially during mating season or if they feel threatened. It's best to observe these powerful animals from a safe distance to avoid any potential conflict. We always recommend viewing them from a respectable distance or from an authorized vessel!

Did you know? The "humpback comeback" refers to the remarkable recovery of humpback whale populations in the North Pacific, including the Salish Sea, after near extinction due to commercial whaling in the 20th century. Once hunted to critical levels, international protections such as the 1966 global ban on humpback whaling and the 1982 moratorium by the International Whaling Commission allowed these majestic creatures to rebound.

In the Salish Sea, humpbacks were rarely seen as recently as the 1990s. However, conservation efforts and improved ocean health have dramatically increased sightings over the past two decades. These whales now migrate annually from warm breeding grounds in Hawaii, Mexico, or Central America to the nutrient-rich waters of the Pacific Northwest for feeding.

Their recovery symbolizes hope, showing the positive impact of collective global action to protect marine life. However, humpbacks still face threats, including ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and changing ocean conditions due to climate change, making ongoing conservation efforts critical. That is why we consistently donate to local conservation organizations that study, protect, and monitor these incredible cetaceans!

A humpback whale's fluke (tail) can measure up to 15 feet wide, making it one of the largest in the whale species. The size of the fluke helps these whales with powerful propulsion while diving or swimming. 💙🐳
