Did you know? The "humpback comeback" refers to the remarkable recovery of humpback whale populations in the North Pacific, including the Salish Sea, after near extinction due to commercial whaling in the 20th century. Once hunted to critical levels, international protections such as the 1966 global ban on humpback whaling and the 1982 moratorium by the International Whaling Commission allowed these majestic creatures to rebound.
In the Salish Sea, humpbacks were rarely seen as recently as the 1990s. However, conservation efforts and improved ocean health have dramatically increased sightings over the past two decades. These whales now migrate annually from warm breeding grounds in Hawaii, Mexico, or Central America to the nutrient-rich waters of the Pacific Northwest for feeding.
Their recovery symbolizes hope, showing the positive impact of collective global action to protect marine life. However, humpbacks still face threats, including ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and changing ocean conditions due to climate change, making ongoing conservation efforts critical. That is why we consistently donate to local conservation organizations that study, protect, and monitor these incredible cetaceans!
