“Lions, Tigers and Bears. Oh My!” It took a few decades to learn that the last species of bears on the African continent became extinct in the late 1800’s and that tigers are indigenous to Asia, not Africa. It took another handful of years to learn that penguins were not only indigenous to Antarctica.
The African penguin, or black-footed penguin, is also nicknamed the “jackass penguin” because they make a loud donkey-like "braying" sound and remain with the same partner for their entire lives. Their populations are decreasing, and scientists consider the species to be highly vulnerable to extinction. Of the estimated 1.5 million African penguins that existed 1910, only 10% remained at the end of the 20th century.
It's a 40 minute plus drive from Cape Town city center to Boulder Beach and Foxy Beach at Boulders Bay. There are wooden walkways surrounding the colony and observation platforms at Foxy Beach while at Boulders Beach, you can watch the penguins play in the surf and even approach them as they waddle about on land. For a closer experience, you can go swimming with the penguins or paddle a kayak through the waters among them.
While not a determining influence in deciding on a South African safari experience, a visit to Cape Town is a must. Can you hear the penguins calling? Let Born Free put together your ideal
Africa adventure.
