A full-moon hike on Lion's Head is a highlight (not to be experienced without a headlamp) but it attracts literally thousands of other hikers. This level of activity has now spilled over into weekends as well, and this past weekend tragedy struck when a young hiker fell to his death - there are some conflicting reports but trail congestion may be a reason why he went off-trail.

Access, safety and sustainability have to be balanced within a trail's finite carry-capacity, and Lion's Head is now regularly exceeding that limit. It's arguably the most summited mountain in the world and the busiest hiking trail in South Africa, and it shows with erosion, plant and trail damage, litter, and safety issues.

We ask local hikers to do the right thing and reduce the human impact by:
• consider going for a hike on a quieter part of the mountain if the parking is overflowing
• always staying on-trail
• being patient and courteous to other hikers
• respecting the ethic of no music and no smoking
• picking up litter
