Bryn White tells us about the SOSCP "capacity building" project http://ht.ly/189yvH. This is an innovative, partnership approach to providing environmental planning for small communities in one of Canada's most sensitive ecosystems. Another cool project funded through CIT at the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia ツ

Cool (via following a link): The City of Campbell River is a "solar community" - one of the ways this community is addressing challenges. Climate change and land uses are closely linked. Karin Kirkpatrick, Executive Director of the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia talks a little about that in her reflections on a recent trip China in this post: http://ow.ly/FFBQ

The City of Campbell River, a scenic oceanfront city on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, has a head-start as a Solar Community having already installed four solar powered cross-walks with eight more to be added this year. The City also recently installed two solar radar recorders that count ve...

Grasslands Conservation Council of British Columbia was one of the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia's "poster children" in its 20 year look-back published in 2009 by the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia. Here's a current post on GCC by Kamloops social media guy Arjun Singh and Tasha Sargent (good stuff Arjun!)

I've been impressed with the work of the BC Grasslands Conservation Council (GCC). The GCC is based in Kamloops and, over the past years, they have worked cooperatively with governments and citizens to preserve what I now know to be...

Of interest to the folks at / Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia and Real Estate Institute of British Columbia (from Mashable): How Real Estate Pros are Using Social Media for Real Results

Good Monday morning! A shout out to some others working in BC's non-metro communities: Vancouver Foundation, Organic Islands Festival & Sustainbility Expo, Grasslands Conservation Council of British Columbia, Cam McAlpine,
The Land Conservancy of British Columbia, Fraser Valley Conservancy - thanks for what you do!

Thanks to Vancouver Island Real Estate Board for posting this: the "2009 Buyer Profile, tracking where people are coming from, what they’re buying and why." A useful tool when looking at changes taking place now and in the near future in Island communities. Any insights? Anything out of the ordinary? This is the kind of thing Marty Douglas, George Penfold, or Tom Dishlevoy might be able to summarize for the Nanaimo-north region.

Citizens want to be more engaged (77% say more ) http://ht.ly/25gPZ - is this true in BC's non-metro communities? Let us know what you think: Which BC communities are leading the way in citizen engagement.

Government agencies are falling short when it comes to using social networks, online communities and websites to engage with citizens, new research suggests.

Thanks - A great way to start the morning: 19 minutes of Ellen Dunham-Jones giving suburbia a vision for the future - important stuff for small cities as well as larger urban centres with (increasingly expensive/unaffordable) aging surburban areas.

TED Talks Ellen Dunham-Jones fires the starting shot for the next 50 years' big sustainable design project: retrofitting suburbia. To come: Dying malls rehabilitated, dead "big box" stores re-inhabited, parking lots transformed into thriving wetlands.

The Urban Land Institute has great information that can be useful to non-urban communities too. This post from the Irish Times about neighbourhood walkability and health benefits will also interest friends of the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia page and Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia group (not to mention people at Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW), City of Victoria, and CV2050 - All about the sustainability conversation in the Comox Valley

is part of a very cool organization - and now the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia has an official "page" here on Facebook. If you're involved in sustainability, housing, conservation, development - pretty much anything related to land use then you may know that the Fdn has been making investments in BC communities and organizations for 22+ years. Check them out!

More great Interior BC info from the folks at Grasslands Conservation Council of British Columbia: "Go for a hike or bike ride in Lac du Bois this weekend! Please stay on the trails or minimize your footprint, and always check your shoes/tires for invasive plants." I'm thinking Kamloops folks - Arjun Singh, John Church, and Elizabeth Meyer - might be interested.

Thanks to Grasslands Conservation Council of British Columbia (which has received funding from the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia) for posting... "There has been quite a lot of support for finding a solution to the off road vehicle/grassland issue. It's encouraging!"

Even if all the users are responsible riders, restrictions on areas and possibly on seasons will still be necessary to protect the land. Like any other recreational activity, rules and regulations are being introduced because of the growth in the industry.

Investments in , , - and in this case: . The Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia made a significant grant to the Organic Farming Institute of BC several years ago. Sarah Clark describes OFIBC and how it's helping farmers and communities, particularly in BC's southern Okanagan, but across the province as well. Something to note for Sustainable Food Vancouver Island.

The Organic Farming Institute of BC (OFIBC) was launched in 2005. A founding board of regional representatives, including organic farmers worked with the Regional District of Similkameen-Okanagan's economic ...

At we talk a lot "around" the topic. Cara Pike, http://ht.ly/1Ys96 on the other hand, has been focused specifically on this topic and how to engage people in making change. Here's her recent post links Copenhagen, "climategate," and the Gulf debacle. If you work on rural conservation and environmental issues you'll find Cara's insights valuable.

Cara Pike discusses the best themes, frames, and messages
that can help promote climate policies and programs in light of recent global events.
