🕊️ How the Papal Conclave Works 🇻🇦

Ever wonder how the next Pope is chosen? It all happens inside the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City during what's called a conclave — Latin for “with a key,” because the cardinals are literally locked in until a decision is made.

Here's how it works 👇

🔐 Cardinals under the age of 80 gather in total secrecy. No phones, no media — just prayer, ballots, and intense reflection.

🗳️ Votes are cast up to four times a day. After each round, the ballots are burned in a special stove. None knows how long it'll last.

☁️ The smoke is the world’s signal:

Black smoke = No Pope yet.

White smoke = A new Pope has been chosen!

📍 If you’re in St. Peter’s Square these days, look towards the right of the dome, and to the buildings immediately adjacent. There's a series of small roofs. You will look for the roof of the Sistine Chapel — a small chimney is installed just for this purpose. The moment white smoke rises, cheers erupt and the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica ring out. You never know, you just might be in the right place at right time! 🤩

First smoke signal will be around 7:15pm this evening, May 7 2025. The Conclave has officially started!

Pope Francis' final resting place: the Stunning Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. One of Rome's oldest and most revered basilicas, Pope Francis will be honored in a place rich in history and devotion. 🌿🕊️

He will reach the Basilica after a slow vehicle procession through the streets of Rome after the funeral (which will take place @ Saint Peter's at 10:00am on Saturday April 26)

Be mindful of the crowds that may gather along the roads to witness the procession. And the extra security measures being enforced. Churches and sites may close momentarily.

🌍 Remembering Pope Francis 🕊️

As the world mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, we are closely following all developments and will continue to keep you informed. Here is a breakdown of what we know thus far:

🔹 April 23-25: Pope Francis' body will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica. The Basilica will be open for the faithful to pay their respects, though guided tours will not be available. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel will remain open through Friday.

🔹 April 26: The Funeral Mass will be held in St. Peter’s Square at 10 AM. On this day, St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Castel Gandolfo Museum Complex will be closed. Burial will take place at Santa Maria Maggiore, and the Basilica will not be accessible during the ceremony.

🔹 Conclave: The Conclave to elect the new Pope is expected to begin 15-20 days after Pope Francis' passing. The Sistine Chapel will be closed during this time, while the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica will remain open with some adjustments.

Please be prepared for increased security and large crowds in Vatican City during this historic period. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate these challenging times together.
