🐢 Turtle Shells: Not Just Armor
More than a shell—it's living, feeling bone.

• Made of fused ribs and spine, covered in keratin
• Contains nerve endings—can feel pressure and pain
• Damage to the shell = serious injury, like a broken bone
• Sensitive to touch—some enjoy gentle scratches
• Cracks can lead to infection and require treatment
• A vital part of the turtle's body, not removable or replaceable

🩹 Handle with care—it's not just a shell, it’s part of them

Manatees literally control their buoyancy by farting. Yes, you read that right. Sea cows use gas to glide.

While fish rely on fancy internal air bladders to stay afloat, manatees went for a… smellier solution. They’ve mastered underwater weightlessness by holding in or releasing farts. It's like scuba diving powered by beans.

These gentle, chubby sea giants adjust the gas in their intestines to either rise toward the surface or sink down to the seafloor. Need to chill in the shallows? Keep the gas in. Want to dive deep? Let it rip.

And this isn’t just a silly party trick. It’s actually a critical survival skill. By fine-tuning their buoyancy with gas, manatees conserve energy, avoid predators, and navigate their underwater world with total zen.

Scientists have confirmed that when manatees get constipated or hold too much gas, they actually float uncontrollably and can’t dive properly. It’s like a balloon with fins. One study even showed a manatee who couldn’t sink until it finally passed enough gas to regain balance.

Flatulence = freedom.

These animals weigh over 1,000 pounds, yet they glide as gracefully as ballerinas. All thanks to the simple power of digestive gas. So next time someone makes a fart joke, just remind them…

For manatees, flatulence is physics.

So yeah, evolution looked at these massive marine mammals and said, “Let’s skip the high-tech gear. Give them bubble control.”

And it totally worked.

Proof that sometimes, the secret to graceful movement is just... knowing when to toot.

Boy oh boy our green turtles have been CRAZY this year! Due to lack of dunes (thank you Milton🙄) our green mamas have been nesting under/near beach front homes. We’ve also had several mamas lay nests on top of other nests (the first photo). It looks like a construction zone out here!🐢🌴

This was taken today in Siesta Key, Florida. People playing volleyball during a storm with lightning nearby.

Also today, just up the coast, 4 people were under a cabana on Holmes Beach when it was struck by lightning. One person was transported to the hospital. This past Saturday, lightning struck a Tiki Hut on Marco Island with 4 women underneath. 3 were transported to the hospital. On Friday, 3 people were struck by lightning in New Smyrna Beach. One of those, a 29-year-old man from Colorado on his honeymoon, was killed.

All of these incidents have happened in just the past 4 days. Remember, "when thunder roars, go indoors." If you hear thunder, you are close enough to potentially get struck. Summer just started, we have many weeks and months ahead of Florida lightning. Please, please be safe everyone.
