🐳Baby pilot whales are one of the wonders we’re sometimes lucky enough to spot during our tours. They always stay close to their mothers, on whom they completely depend during the first years of life.

Watching them swim among the adults, learn, play, and communicate is a moving experience that connects us to the very heart of the ocean.

Each encounter reminds us how important it is to protect these special creatures and preserve their habitat so that future generations can also experience their magic.

The resident pilot whale population along Costa Adeje, Tenerife, is one of the largest in the world!

Today, we’re sharing some fascinating facts about these incredible marine mammals:⁣

🌊 Pilot whales have exceptionally large brains, among the largest of any animal species in relation to body size.⁣

🌊 They are highly social animals, often found in groups called pods, which typically consist of 10 to 30 members.⁣

🌊 Known as the “cheetahs of the sea,” they can reach speeds of up to 36 km/h, making them one of the fastest cetaceans.⁣

🌊 They are expert divers, capable of plunging to depths of over 1 km in search of prey and staying submerged for extended periods.⁣

🌊 Pilot whale pods are matriarchal, often led by older females, known as matriarchs, who play a central role in the social structure. Younger females tend to stay with their mothers for life, strengthening the pod’s cohesion.⁣

🌊 They are relatively long-lived animals, with an average life expectancy of 45 to 60 years.⁣

Witnessing these majestic creatures in Tenerife is an unforgettable experience! 🌟⁣

🐳Did you know that…? ⁣
The pilot whales, one of the most fascinating cetacean species that can be spotted in the waters of Tenerife, are present in part due to the abundance of giant squids in the area. ⁣

These pilot whales are known for their incredible ability to dive to great depths in search of their favorite food! ⁣

🐋Unforgettable encounter yesterday!
We had the incredible luck of spotting a majestic humpback whale during all of our tours.

It’s not common to see them in Tenerife’s waters as these are migratory whales, travelling thousands of kilometers every year.

They feed in cold waters and reproduce in warm waters during the winter. Now, with summer approaching, they begin their journey north to find food again.

Humpbacks can reach up to 16 meters in length and weigh nearly 40 tons. During the breeding season, they can lose up to half their body weight, which is why they need to feed heavily, up to 2 tons a day, mostly on krill, sardines, and small fish.

They’re called humpbacks for the way they arch their back before diving, and also known as the “whales with giant wings” thanks to their impressive 5-meter-long fins.

They’re also the most showy whales in the ocean, famous for their powerful breaches and playful surface behavior.

🐬Sometimes during our tours we spot common dolphins.

Despite their name (given because they can be seen in the thousands in some parts of the world), the common dolphin is actually a rare sight in Tenerife.
Here, they usually appear in small groups of 10 to 20 individuals.⁣

Thanks to our specialized boat and extensive sighting network, we have the best chance of finding them in the Teno – Rasca Marine Protected Area, usually more than 1 km offshore. ⁣

We see them alongside Atlantic spotted dolphins and striped dolphins, following seabirds actively hunting in the open ocean.⁣

🌍 Today, on Earth Day, we’re reminded that caring for the planet also means caring for the ocean.

At Whale Watch Tenerife, we believe that connection with nature begins with understanding it.
That’s why every time we head out to sea, we do so with respect, awareness, and love for the cetaceans that call these waters home.
